The Ghosts of Halloween Past: A World Tour of Spooky Celebrations

On October 31, people all over the planet celebrate Halloween, a holiday which conjures up thoughts of costumes, candy, ghosts, ghouls, witches and werewolves.

Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, attending Halloween costume parties, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, bobbing for apples, divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories, and watching horror films.

The roots of the many Halloween traditions can reportedly be traced back to pagan rites of old and to ancient Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain.
