In the meantime, US border security personnel, reinforced by some 5,000 troops, is continuing to strengthen the southern border of the country, installing fences topped with barbed wire and preparing to stop the illegal migrants.

A large group of migrants from Honduras and other Central American countries is travelling through the Mexican city of Irapuato on its way to the US border.

Earlier this month, the Pentagon rejected a request from the US Department of Homeland Security to deploy troops on the border with Mexico in order to act as "emergency law enforcement" and stop the illegal migrants from entering the country.
