Mosfilm was established in the USSR in November 1923. Since then, it has produced more than 2,500 films, with many of them receiving local awards, and more prestigious accolades. Mosfilm co-produced the two most recent Russian movies to win the Oscar Award for the Best Foreign Language Film — Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears (1980), directed by Vladimir Menshov, and Burnt by the Sun (1994), directed by Nikita Mikhalkov.
