The Afghan campaign started in December 1979 and ended in February 1989, with Soviet forces in Afghanistan supporting the government against the US-backed opposition. Following the troops' withdrawal, a civil war in the country resulted in various militant groups, including the Taliban, being strengthened, and consequently also the US-led intervention in 2001.

Afghanistan war veterans gathered near the Monument to Soldiers-Internationalists in Moscow to hold a march marking 30 years since the withdrawal of Soviet troops from the Central Asian country.
