Footage filmed by the crews during a mission shows Japanese Mitsubishi F-15J and F-2 fighters following the Russian bombers for stretches of the flight.
A video made public by the Russian Defence Ministry on Friday shows Japanese warplanes shadowing Russian Tu-95MS strategic bombers during a 15-hour-long patrol mission in the Western Pacific.
Commenting on the video, the Russian military also stressed that the long-range patrol was conducted in full compliance with international aviation rules.
