Hearing on Trump's Financial Records Subpoena Planned on 14 May - Report

US President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit Monday against his own accounting firm, Mazars USA LLP, and Chair of the House Oversight Committee Elijah Cummings in an effort to stop the firm from handing over details on Trump's past financial dealings to the committee.

Mazars USA had faced an April 29 deadline for complying with the demand from the Elijah Cummings, but a federal judge in Washington said the firm would not need to respond until one week after he rules on Trump's request for a preliminary suspension of the subpoena, Reuters report says.

The lawsuit argues that the subpoena initiated by Cummings, a Democrat, is "invalid and unenforceable because it has no legitimate legislative purpose." According to the document, the subpoena seeks to investigate every "aspect of Trump's personal finances, businesses, and even his family." This includes the time preceding Trump's presidency, the document says, arguing that the Democrats are simply "obsessed with finding something they can use to damage the president."

According to the filing, Cummings launched a subpoena without consulting Republicans of the Committee and based it on testimonies of Trump's former personal attorney, now convicted Michael Cohen, whom the lawsuit refuses to call a "reliable witness."

Trump's lawyers are also asking the court to suspend the subpoena until the court filing is reviewed by the judge, according to The Inquirer.
