"Today’s meetings were a positive step forward," Pompeo said via Twitter on Tuesday. "US and Russia have demonstrated in the past that we can cooperate on key international issues. We urge Russia to work with us to change the trajectory of the relationship for the benefit of both nations."

Earlier, Pompeo held talks in Sochi with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on a range of security issues including the situations in Syria and Iran along with arms control.

This is the first official visit of Pompeo as the 70th US secretary of state to Russia. Previously, he held a meeting with Lavrov on the side-lines of the Arctic Council in Finland.
