Brexit Party EU Parl't Victory May Cause 'Earthquake' in UK Politics – Journo

But with criticism mounting from Conservative backbenchers, will May decide to finally call off what have been largely unsuccessful discussions to focus on other ways to deliver Brexit, before the revised deadline day of October the 31st? Sputnik has spoken with journalist Marcus Stead for more.

Sputnik: Do you think that the talks between Labour and the Conservatives have been a waste of time?

Marcus Stead: Theresa May doesn't seem to be getting anywhere at all in these talks with the Labour Party, and there's a meeting of the 1922 Committee which is made up of all Conservative backbench MPs this coming Thursday.

In theory she can't be challenged for the leadership under her party's own rules because she survived a vote of no confidence last autumn, and therefore can't be challenged again until this autumn, but there's talk right now that if she doesn't announce her departure date very soon they might change these party rules. So this Thursday is going to be a very interesting day.

Corbyn and May could in theory reach an agreement, but Corbyn; who in his heart is a Eurosceptic, would struggle to get the support of his own backbenchers, most of whom do not like him, and most of whom are pro-EU.

Sputnik: Is Nigel Farage the politician who could finally deliver Brexit?

Marcus Stead: Britain is a country ill at ease with itself at the moment, in a way that I haven't seen in my lifetime; and this Brexit Party has appeared from nowhere and is likely to do very well indeed in the European Parliamentary elections. The latest polls have the Brexit Party with twice as many votes as Labour and the Lib Dems, and three times more than the Conservatives.

It appears to be the case of the political establishment and their friends in the mainstream media, versus the people now, but I have my reservations about Nigel Farage; the leader of the Brexit Party, in many ways.

He's made plenty of enemies even within the Eurosceptic movement, and the story of the last twenty years has been one of constant infighting inside UKIP. And every five years a new batch of UKIP MEPs have been elected to the European Parliament, but it's never taken very long for that group to split and fall into factions, because people within the group have started falling out with Mr Farage because of his leadership style.

He also failed to develop UKIP into a serious political party. It never did break through in a major way in Westminster and lots of opportunities were missed over many years it has to be said, but as an orator and as a media performer he is superb, on TV and on radio, and in public speaking, and it's his personality that has been at the forefront of the campaign.

The Brexit vote will largely go the way of the Brexit Party, and I'm expecting them to gain an enormous victory a week on Thursday, and that will cause an earthquake in British politics.
