The statements made by Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell about the alleged Russian threat are damaging to relations between Moscow and Madrid, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

Spain's ambassador to Russia was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday after the acting foreign minister of Spain made statements about alleged Russian threat.

After the 'unfriendly' remarks were voiced, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that it expressed bewilderment and regret to the Spanish ambassador.

“Bewilderment and regret were expressed to him in connection with unfriendly statements by Spanish acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, EU and Cooperation Josep Borrell about Russia, which he made in an interview with El Periodico on May 23 this year," it said.

"The ambassador was told that the words of the Spanish politician, which are detrimental to the relations between Russia and Spain, contradict the mutual perception of bilateral relations as friendly, partner-like and mutually beneficial, which is fixed in all official documents signed between the two countries recently," the ministry said.

In a conversation with the publication, Spain's top diplomat, responding to a question about geopolitical challenges facing the EU, called Russia an "old enemy" and said Russia "is turning into a threat".
