"On 25 June, the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Maldives signed an agreement in Moscow, which will enter into force on 25 July 2019, over the reciprocal cancellation of visa requirements for citizens of the Russian Federation and citizens of the Republic of Maldives", the ministry said in a statement.
The message stressed that Russian and Maldivian citizens owning general civil, diplomatic and service passports will be able to enter, exit, transit and stay in the territory of both states without a visa for a period of up to 90 days, provided that the stay does not imply employment, study or permanent residence.
Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid said last week that his country will open an embassy in Russia, in a move which will be a "significant milestone" in relations between two nations.
Currently, the interests of the Maldives, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, within the Russian Federation are represented by the Sri Lankan embassy in Moscow.
