Losing to Simona Halep of Romania during the Wimbledon final on Saturday, US tennis player Serena Williams missed the chance to win her 24th Grand Slam title.

Romania's Simona Halep, 27, has defeated American tennis star Serena Williams, 37, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to win her first Wimbledon title.

"I never played a better match", Halep said after the 56-minute Wimbledon final, as quoted by AFP.

The agency also quotes Williams, who commented on Halep’s game: “She played out of her mind…I was like a deer in headlights."

Halep has won one Grand Slam before, triumphing in the 2018 French Open. Serena Williams has been chasing her 24th Grand Slam title since winning the 2017 Australian Open.

Simona Halep stressed the importance of the victory to her and her family in the post-match interview.

Twitterians rushed to share their reactions after the game. Some said that Halep definitely deserved the win as Williams was not in her best shape during the game.

Others were even more blunt when commenting on Williams' performance.

But the overall reaction was positive, with many congratulating Halep on her first Wimbledon triumph.
