The day before a strong 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck the nearby Indonesian island of Molucca, resulting in the deaths of two people.

The US Geological Survey reported Monday that a 6.4 earthquake hit Papua New Guinea at around 08:21 UTC.

The quake struck 26 km (14 miles) north of Kandrian, in New Britain, at a depth of 33 km.

There's no official information on possible damage or injuries.

Papua New Guinea is part of the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a tectonic fault with high seismic activity, which accounts for about 90 percent of all earthquakes on Earth.

Last month, thousands of people were evacuated due to the eruption of Ulawun volcano in the southwestern part of the island of New Britain in Papua New Guinea.
