The Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China to the UN has condemned what it described as 'the wrongful statement on Hong Kong' issued by UN Human Rights head Michelle Bachelet. In a statement, China's mission said that the UN official was interfering in China's domestic affairs and sent the wrong signal to violent criminal offenders.
Addressing the ongoing protests in Hong Kong, the mission stated that the demonstrators showed a 'tendency of resorting to terrorism' by smashing public facilities, paralysing the local airport, blocking public transport and using lethal weapons.
The statement added that Beijing strongly supports Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam and her government in discharging their duties in compliance with the law.
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet earlier in the day called for an impartial probe into alleged instances of force used against demonstrators in Hong Kong.
Protests began more than two months ago after a local legislature opened debates on a bill that would have allowed extradition to mainland China. The city’s chief executive, Carrie Lam, has since declared the bill "dead." Protesters are demanding that it be withdrawn completely. Locals also want the city authorities to implement universal suffrage and retract criminal charges against protesters.
