The jet was en routine to a training mission when the accident took place.
“A MiG-21 trainer aircraft on a routine training mission from Gwalior Airbase crashed near the airfield at around 10:00 local time. Both pilots ejected safely,“ the Indian Air Force said in a statement.
The IAF has so far lost 10 aircraft in 2019 and Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh told parliament in June that the force has lost 33 aircraft, including 19 fighter jets, since 2015.
A Court of Inquiry will ascertain the cause of the accident.
