Two 737 MAX aircraft have crashed in the past 12 months - one in Indonesia in October 2018 and the other in Ethiopia in March this year - killing 346 people overall. The tragedies prompted governments around the world to ground the plane.

American Airlines has said that Boeing 737 MAX cancelled flights will be extended until 15 January amid an extensive scrutiny of software changes to the grounded aircraft. The US airline said that it is looking to gradually resume MAX flights from 16 January.

The company said it believed that the updated aircraft software will result in the recertification of the plane later this year.

The deadly crash of the Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX 8 took place in Indonesia on 29 October 2018, killing all 189 people on board. The plane, headed for the city of Pangkal Pinang on the Indonesian island of Bangka, lost contact with air traffic control 13 minutes after taking off from Jakarta and fell into the sea.

The Ethiopian Airlines Flight crash near the country’s capital on 10 March that claimed the lives of 157 people has triggered major investigations and led to the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX model around the world.

Numerous reports have suggested that a malfunction in the plane's anti-stall system caused the tragedy.
