Live Updates: Protests Continue in Barcelona After Court Verdict for Pro-Independence Leaders

On Monday, the Supreme Court of Spain ruled that nine of the twelve officials who stood behind the organisation of a referendum on Catalonia's independence from Spain were guilty of treason, rebellion and the misuse of public funds.

Protests erupted in Barcelona earlier this week after nine of the twelve officials who organised an independence referendum two years ago were found guilty of treason and misuse of public funds.

The court also issued an international arrest warrant for former President of Catalonia Carles Puigdemont.

In 2017, the Spanish autonomous region of Catalonia held a referendum on self-determination which was not recognised by Madrid. Over 92 per cent of the 770,000 people who participated in the plebiscite voted in favour of independence from Spain.

"We have requested the competitions committee of the Spanish Football Federation to meet and change the location of El Clasico to Madrid because of exceptional circumstances beyond our control," the league said in a statement sent to AFP.

According to Spanish media reports, Catalan pro-independence groups are preparing a demonstration in Barcelona on 26 October, the day when a match between Barcelona and Real Madrid is scheduled to take place at Camp Nou stadium.

High-speed trains between Spain's Barcelona and Figueres stopped running on Wednesday morning because a fibre optics cable, which rail operators have said was "cut intentionally," was found along the tracks, media reported, citing sources from Spain's Administrator of Railway Infrastructures.

The Barcelona-Figueres train line is located in Spain's semi-autonomous region of Catalonia, where mass protests have continued since Monday following an unpopular Supreme Court ruling.

According to the sources, as cited by Spain's Efe news outlet, trains stopped operating at 6:40 a.m. (04:40 GMT).

When train services will resume is still unknown since technicians working on the problem are still waiting for equipment to arrive at the scene, the sources said.

Catalan health authorities said on Wednesday morning that 125 people were injured on 15 October in protests in Catalonia, which erupted after the Spanish Supreme Court sentenced several of the autonomous region's independence leaders to lengthy prison terms.

Nationwide protests erupted in Spain on Monday, following the ruling. Violence ensued as police starting using batons and foam bullets against the crowds. That first day, at least 131 people were reported to have been injured in the clashes.

"On October 15, the SEM [System of Medical Emergencies] realized 125 medical assistance actions," the Catalan Health Department's public health agency tweeted.

The majority of injuries — 74 — took place in Barcelona, the agency said.

According to Spain's Interior Ministry, as cited by El Mundo news outlet, a total of 72 security officers were injured in the clashes on Tuesday and Wednesday morning — 54 from Catalonia's autonomous police force and 18 from Spain's national Police Corps. However, it is unclear whether this number is included in the health agency's figures.
