Live Updates: Barcelona's Sagrada Familia Basilica Limits Access Amid Catalan Protests - Official

Protests started in Barcelona earlier this week following Spain Supreme Court's ruling concerning the former Catalan officials who were sentenced to prison over their role in organising the 2017 independence referendum.

The famous Sagrada Familia Basilica in Barcelona has announced that it has limited access to the church amid the ongoing Catalan protests.

Earlier in the day, the official Twitter account of the basilica said that a group of protesters blocked the entrance.

In another post, cathedral officials say that the basilica will be open to visitors as long as their safety can be ensured.

Protests erupted in Barcelona on Monday following a ruling of Spain's Supreme Court that nine out of 12 former Catalan officials were sentenced to prison over their role in organising an independence referendum in Catalonia in 2017. Then over 90% of voters said 'yes' to Catalonia's independence but Madrid called the referendum illegal and arrested several Catalan leaders.

BARCELONA (Sputnik) - Less than half of the labor force across a majority of sectors in Spain's semi-autonomous Catalonia region, where a general strike is taking place on Friday, are participating in the action, the region's government said.

"[About] 30 percent of public officials are participating in the strike," the Catalan Ministry of Employment said.

Other sectors also showed a relatively low participation level in the strike — 26.3 percent of employees in the public health and 43 percent in the public education sector joined the strike, the ministry said.

However, 90 percent of university employees and up to 80 percent of businesses owners have not shown up to work on Friday.

Thousands of protesters are marching toward Barcelona, the capital of Spain's semi-autonomous region of Catalonia, on Friday in protest of the Supreme Court's unpopular ruling to hand out lengthy prison terms to the region's independence leaders.

As the protesters approach Catalonia's capital, more people are joining the march. On Friday morning, the marches that started in Vic and Berga united in Sant Quirze del Valles, just 12 miles outside of Barcelona. Another two columns, which started from Tarrega and Tarragona, also merged this morning in Martorell, 13 miles away from Barcelona.

The marchers intend to meet in central Barcelona on Friday to participate in the city-wide demonstration, which coincides with a region-wide general strike that started earlier in the day.

The strike was called on by pro-independence trade unions in response to the ruling. Social services, including transportation, education and health services have been affected throughout Catalonia but continue to operate at a decreased capacity, adhering to the government's established quota for the provision of minimal services during strikes.
