Live Updates: UK MPs Continue Debates as Johnson Launches New Bid to Push for Vote on Brexit Deal

The situation remains unclear as the UK government and Parliament pursue different Brexit options: while the MPs required Prime Minister Boris Johnson to ask Brussels for another extension, the Tory leader refused to sign their letter to the EU, stressing that the country would leave the bloc by 31 October.

The United Kingdom is preparing for debates on Brexit, and a possible vote in Parliament after a series of controversial steps carried out by both London and Brussels.

According to reports, the EU is ready to postpone the deadline until 31 January 2020, while the British Cabinet is still determined to carry out Brexit by the end of this month, stating that any delay would be harmful to both sides.

The UK and the EU struck a new divorce deal on Thursday following days of intense talks. Now Johnson has to get support for his agreement in the House of Commons in order to put an end to the Brexit saga after over 3 years of disagreements and lead the country from the bloc.

MPs, however, may be attempting to amend the deal in order to include provisions on the customs union or even request a confirmatory public referendum, which Johnson and his supporters oppose.

"Despite having told the British public over and over again he would never do it, the letter has in fact been sent. The extension allows this House the space to scrutinise the prime minister's Brexit deal", Corbyn said.

"This was sent in compliance with section 1 of the Benn Act," Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay said. "The president of the European Council has accepted the request as valid and indicated he is considering it and consulting with member states."

"There are two issues: one of substance, the other of circumstance. Today's motion seeks approval for same things as Saturday's. It is clear the motions are in substance the same. This matter was decided fewer than 49 hours ago", said John Bercow, Speaker of the lower house.

"My starting point is that agreeing the Withdrawal Agreement is self-evidently in our economic interest. It would bring an end to the damaging uncertainty and delay of the past years, and allow businesses to get on with taking decisions, including around recruitment and investment", finance minister Sajid Javid said in the letter.

Barclay explained that the risk remains because the EU has not agreed to a delay and the House of Commons has not agreed the deal.

No one wants another delay to Brexit, a French diplomatic source said on Saturday, after UK lawmakers passed an amendment calling for Boris Johnson to ask for another Brexit postponement.

"We are clear where we stand on the customs union as something that we cannot support and will not support, and I believe that that will be the stance we will have later on when we see the wording", Democratic Unionist Party legislator Jim Shannon said.
