Media correspondents on Twitter supposed that if nominated, Biegun would replace John Sullivan as No. 2 official at the US Department of State. Sullivan now serves as the US Ambassador to Russia.

If confirmed, he would succeed John Sullivan as #2 at the State Department. Sullivan has served as the US Secretary of State and is now going through the Senate confirmation process to be the next US Ambassador to Russia.

In August 2018, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Biegun was named the special envoy for North Korea to oversee the denuclearization process. It is not clear yet, who will take Biegun's place in case of his nomination.
