The protest action comes just two days ahead of an extradition hearing to determine the fate of Julian Assange that will take place at Woolwich Crown Court in London.

Protesters are gathering in London to support WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange just two days before the first set of hearings into his possible extradition to the United States.

The demonstrators will march from Australia House to Parliament Square. Assange's father John Shipton, Pink Floyd musician Roger Waters, singer M.I.A., and Former Greek Finance Minister and leader of the European Realistic Disobedience Front (MeRA25) Yanis Varoufakis are expected to join the protests in Parliament Square.

Assange spent seven years at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London after skipping bail and asking for political asylum in 2012 to evade possible extradition to the United States.

The whistleblower was forced out of the embassy last year and is being held at a high-security prison in London pending an extradition trial.

WikiLeaks Editor-in-Chief, Kristinn Hrafnsson, has applauded today's turnout at the march in support for Julian Assange saying that it was much better than expected.

"More and more people understand that what is at stake is serious and how serious this issue is. Because it is not just about Assange, it’s about freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of journalism. We feel the growing momentum, and I do not worry – in the end there will be such a shouting loud voice towards those in power here that they will have to stop this nonsense," Hrafnsson said.

The journalist added that on day two of the extradition hearing, the lawyers for Julian will present their overwhelming evidence to support their argument that he should not be extradited.

"I would also tell people: beware of the propaganda that will probably be seen in a lot of mainstream media, look for facts and fight for Julian," he concluded.

"He's telling the truth, He's being punished for telling the truth and that's why we defend him", the New Left Review's Tariq Ali said.

"Standing up for Assange is important because what he has done is he has exposed war crimes of British state terrorists and American state terrorists. And it’s important that people can come out and support Assange. I’ve been supporting him from the first day when he was arrested in the UK. The significance of people coming out today is that it is important to show the government that the US cannot bully people and the US has not signed up to international criminal court," Jim Curran, Chairman of Irish Civil Rights Association said.

"It’s about journalists’ freedom, freedom of the press. If we can’t have truth – then it is not the point of journalism," the campaigner named Sylvia said.
