The novel coronavirus has spread across 50 countries, claiming the lives of more than 2,800 people and infecting more than 83,000 more.

Public gatherings with over 5,000 people in a confined space have been banned in France amid coronavirus fears, the country's health ministry said.

"All public gatherings of more than 5,000 people in a confined space are temporarily banned across France," Health Minister Olivier Veran told journalists.

The minister added that the number of confirmed cases in France has risen to 73 and that no new deaths have been reported.

The 2020 Paris Half Marathon, which was scheduled to take place on 1 March with 44,000 registered runners, has been cancelled as well.

The new coronavirus was first detected in China's Wuhan in December, and since then the infection has spread to 50 countries. The virus has claimed the lives of 2,800 people and infected over 83,000 worldwide.
