COVID-19 Updates: Germany's Coronavirus Tally Rises by 793 to 162,496 - Institute

The pandemic has already claimed more than 243,500 lives worldwide, with at least 3,421,800 confirmed cases in total. However, at least one million people have also recovered from the disease.

The United States currently tops the list of nations most affected by the virus, with at least 1,130,115 infected, including 66,363 fatalities.

In Europe, Spain and Italy are reporting the highest numbers. Authorities in some countries, including the United Kingdom have stated that the peak of the outbreak has been reached, with many nations announcing they will soon lift restrictive measures.

SEOUL (Sputnik) - South Korea registered only 13 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours and no new deaths from COVID-19, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC).

The total number of coronavirus cases in South Korea now stands at 10,793 while the death toll is 250, KCDC said on Sunday. In the past 24 hours, 60 people recovered from COVID-19 in the country; the total number of recovered individuals now stands at 9,183.

Out of the 13 new cases, 10 are imported, KCDC said on Sunday. The country has performed over 611,000 coronavirus tests.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) - Mexico has registered a total of over 22,000 coronavirus cases since the start of the outbreak in the country; in the past 24 hours more than 1,300 cases and 89 deaths were confirmed, according to Mexican Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell.

"Since the first case was confirmed in Mexico [in February] 22,088 infections with the SARS-CoV-2 virus have been registered", Lopez-Gatell said at a Saturday press conference broadcast on Twitter.

According to the deputy health minister, 6,580 people in Mexico are currently being treated for COVID-19. In the past 24 hours, 1,349 new cases and 89 new fatalities were confirmed. The country’s total death toll from COVID-19 now stands at 2,061.

"298 new positive coronavirus test results have been registered … in the past 24 hours nine people died from the [COVID-19] disease", spokesman of the Egyptian Health Ministry Khaled Mugahed said in a statement on Sunday. "The total number of people with coronavirus in Egypt is 6,193; 1,522 people have recovered, 415 people have died".

According to the spokesman, all the new cases were confirmed as a result of tracking people who had had contact with those already infected with the coronavirus.

DUSHANBE (Sputnik) - The first two deaths from COVID-19 have been confirmed in Tajikistan, state TV reports citing the country’s Health Ministry.

According to the ministry, a total of 76 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the country, while more than 2,780 people are under medical surveillance in hospitals with suspected coronavirus symptoms.

TEL AVIV (Sputnik) - The total number of coronavirus cases in Israel on Saturday increased by 33 and reached 16,185, while the number of patients is currently continuing to decline, the country's Health Ministry said.

Two people died from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the cumulative death tally to 229.

As of Saturday evening, the number of people with coronavirus is down to 6,363, according to the Health Ministry. The number of patients in serious condition decreased to 105, of which 82 people need mechanical ventilation.

A total of 193 patients recovered during the day, with 9,593 recoveries since the outbreak.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide has surpassed 3.2 million, nearly 230,000 people have died from the disease, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Saturday.

The global number of cases has risen by over 91,900 to 3,267,184 and the death toll has increased by 5,799 to 229,971, the WHO said.

Most cases of the infection have been recorded in Europe (1,492,024), where the death count stands at over 140,500, it said.

ANKARA (Sputnik) - The number of the coronavirus cases in Turkey rose by 1,983 in the past day to over 124,000, which is the lowest daily number since 30 March, according to figures released by Health Minister Fahrettin Koca on Saturday.

"Today, 1,983 new cases have been identified, with a total of 124,375 infected. We have lost 78 patients today, 3,36 in total. As many as 4,451 patients recovered over the past day, and the total toll [of recoveries] is now 58,259", Koca wrote on Twitter.

NEW YORK (Sputnik) - New York State has confirmed 299 new coronavirus-related deaths in the past 24 hours, Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a press briefing on Saturday.

The number was still appallingly high, and has not reached the level the health authorities would like to see, he added.

On Friday, 831 people were hospitalised, the day before the number was 954. The total number of hospitalised people in New York State is 10,150, down from 10,991 the day earlier, Cuomo said.

New York State has so far confirmed over 18,000 COVID-19 deaths.

BAKU (Sputnik) - The number of COVID-19 cases in Azerbaijan has increased by 40 to 1,894 over the past day, the government's COVID-19 response centre said on Saturday.

"Another 40 cases of coronavirus infection were detected in Azerbaijan, while 46 more people recovered. To date, 1,894 cases of the coronavirus infection have been detected in our country. Of these, 1,411 people recovered, 25 people died, and 458 people continue to be treated in special hospitals. The condition of 14 of them is assessed as serious, the condition of 23 people is assessed as moderate, the condition of the rest is stable", the response centre said in a statement.

ROME (Sputnik) - Italy has registered 474 new COVID-19 related deaths on Saturday, bringing the death toll to 28,710, Civil Protection Department said.

As many as 1,665 patients have recovered in the given period, with a total of 79,914 recoveries.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Italy, including those who recovered and died, increased by 1,900 to 209,328.

The number of infected people, without taking into account recoveries and fatalities, continues to decline by 239 in the past 24 hours. To date, coronavirus has been detected in 100,704 people.

More than 17,000 people remain in hospitals.

TEHRAN (Sputnik) - Iran has registered 802 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, which indicates a decline in the spread of coronavirus in the country, Kianush Jahanpur, the spokesman for the Iranian Health Ministry said on Saturday.

"Over the past day, we recorded 802 new coronavirus cases across the country, which demonstrates an obvious decline compared with the past weeks. Based on these data, a total of 96,448 cases of infection have been recorded," Jahanpur said live on the IRINN TV channel.

A total of 77,350 people have recovered, which is 79-80 percent of all registered cases of the disease, placing Iran in one of the leading positions in terms of the global recovery percentage, according to the health official.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Eurostar, high-speed rail service between the United Kingdom and continental Europe, said on Saturday all passengers would be required to wear masks from Monday as a precaution against the spread of coronavirus.

"From 4 May, passengers must wear a face mask or face covering at our stations and on board in line with guidelines announced by the French and Belgian governments. Please ensure you have a mask with you when you travel. Any type of mask is suitable as long as it effectively covers your nose and mouth", the company said in a statement, adding that those without masks would be fined.

France announced in late April that wearing masks would become mandatory in public transport from 11 May, while in Belgium from 4 May.

Eurostar is a high-speed railway service. Its trains run through Channel Tunnel connecting London with a number of French and Belgian cities, such as Avignon, Brussels, Lille, Lyon, Marseille and Paris.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russia has registered a record 9,623 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the total to 124,054, the national coronavirus response centre said Saturday.

On Friday, Russia reported 7,933 new cases, which was also a record daily increase.

"Over the past 24 hours, 9,623 COVID-19 cases have been registered in 83 regions. Of these, 4,488 (or 46.6 percent) have been detected with people showing no clinical symptoms", the centre said in a statement.

This brings the total tally to 124,054 (+8.4 percent) in 85 regions across Russia.

Of the new cases, 5,358 were registered in Moscow, 807 in the Moscow Region, and 323 in St. Petersburg (compared to yesterday's 3,561, 797, and 349, respectively).

The country's COVID-19 death toll has increased by 57 (96 yesterday) to 1,222.

A total of 1,793 patients have recovered over the past 24 hours (1,601 yesterday), bringing the total number of cured people to 15,013.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Philippines confirmed 156 new cases of the coronavirus over the past 24 hours, and the total number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 reached 8,928, the Health Ministry said on Saturday.

Twenty-four COVID-19 carriers died over the given period, and the overall death toll climbed to 603, according to the ministry.

The number of recoveries increased to 1,124, the health authorities added.
