The number of COVID-19-related deaths throughout the world has surpassed 247,100, more than 3,502,100 cases of the infection have been registered, according to the US-based Johns Hopkins University, which tracks and compiles data from federal and local authorities, media and other sources. Over 1 million have recovered.

The World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic on 11 March.

Over 77,700 COVID-19 patients have been released from hospitals in China. More than 480 are being treated for COVID-19, over 30 of them are in grave condition.

China registered 13 asymptomatic coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, two of them imported.

BEIRUT (Sputnik) - Saudi Arabia reported 1,552 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country to 27,011 according to new data from the Health Ministry.

"Today, 1,552 new infections with the coronavirus were registered, the total number is 27,011, which demonstrates a continued daily increase of infection in the latest period", Health Ministry spokesman Dr Mohammed Abdelali said on Sunday.

Saudi Arabia's coronavirus death toll stands at 184, with eight new deaths having been registered in the past 24 hours, according to the health ministry.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) - Mexico has registered 1,383 new coronavirus cases and 93 new deaths from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, Mexican Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell said.

Speaking at a Sunday press conference broadcast on Twitter, Lopez-Gatell said that the total number of coronavirus-related deaths in the country now stands at 2,154 with 191 suspected COVID-19 fatalities currently being verified.

Mexico now has a total of 23,471 confirmed coronavirus cases, including 6,933 active cases (people displaying COVID-19 symptoms). Over 350 active cases were confirmed in the past 24 hours.

The United States remains the country with the largest number of cases (1,156,924) and the highest COVID-19 death toll (67,451), according to the latest data from the Johns Hopkins University.

GENEVA (Sputnik) - Switzerland has reported the lowest daily rise in coronavirus cases since early March, with 88 people testing positive, the health authority said Sunday.

The total tally is now 29,905. It confirmed 112 new cases on Saturday. The number of deaths rose by eight in the past day to 1,473.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Brazil has surpassed 100,000 with the death toll standing at over 7,000 according to the country’s Health Ministry.

Brazil registered 4,588 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 101,147 according to the ministry’s Sunday data. The coronavirus death toll in the country currently stands at 7,025 with 275 fatalities having been registered in the past 24 hours.

TEL AVIV (Sputnik) - Israel has registered 15 new coronavirus cases in the past day, raising the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country to 16,208 the country’s Health Ministry reports.

As of late Sunday, 6,227 people in Israel are being treated for COVID-19 with 94 of them in grave condition. Two new coronavirus deaths were registered on Sunday, with Israel’s total death toll standing at 232, according to the Health Ministry.

On Sunday, 115 more people recovered from COVID-19 in Israel with the total number of recovered individuals standing at 9,749.

BEIRUT (Sputnik) - Egypt confirmed 272 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, thus raising the total number of registered cases to 6,465 according to the country's Health Ministry.

The ministry said in its Sunday report that 14 new COVID-19 fatalities were registered in the past 24 hours. The total coronavirus death toll in the country now stands at 429. The number of recovered individuals is at over 1,560.

"The number that is the most important number that we look at, which is still tremendously distressing is the number of deaths — 280. You can see that that number has not moved dramatically in a relatively long period of time, but the overall direction is good", he said.

PARIS (Sputnik) - The number of coronavirus-related deaths in France rose by 135 in the past day and is nearing the 25,000 mark, the General Directorate for Health said Sunday.

"We are mourning the deaths of 24,895 people who died from COVID-19 since 1 March: 15,583 have died in hospitals and 9,312 in social and medical-social facilities", it said.

French hospitals have admitted 92,799 coronavirus patients since the start of the outbreak, of whom 50,785 have recovered, with tens of thousands beating the virus at home. More than 168,500 people in the country have so far contracted the disease.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Sunday that his government would give a Vancouver pharma company an equivalent of $125 million to support the research of a potential coronavirus cure.

"We are investing over $175 million [Canadian] dollars to support the Canadian company AbCellera for their very promising COVID-19 research. They have identified antibodies that could be used in drugs to treat this virus," he said.

Human trials of the experimental drug will begin as early as July, Trudeau said in a video statement.

The funding is part of a $240 million package earmarked to improve access to online health services. The government will also set up a new coronavirus council that will ensure that vital medical supplies are readily available in the country.

France's coronavirus death toll rose by 135 on Sunday, bringing the total number of people who lost their lives to the infection to 24,895, the country's health ministry said. 

It added, however, that the number of patients treated in hospitals and in intensive care units continued to decline.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases across the globe has surpassed 3.3 million, while the global death toll is more than 238,000, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

There have been registered over 77,745 new cases worldwide, bringing the overall number to 3,349,786, per the WHO estimations.

The number of deaths increased by 8524 to 238,628.

On March 11, the WHO designated the COVID-19 outbreak as a pandemic.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The number of coronavirus cases in the Russian armed forces has reached 1,254, while the number of military students testing positive has hit 1,228 military, the Defense Ministry said Sunday.

"Blanket testing in the Russian armed forces between March and May 3 returned 1,254 positive results," the ministry said in a statement.

Of them, 344 service members were admitted to military hospitals, 375 isolated at the places of service, 13 taken to civilian health care institutions and 522 were being treated at home. Total 157 have recovered from the infection.

According to the airport, from Monday passengers will be offered to have a molecular biological (polymerise chain reaction or PCR) COVID-19 test upon arrival, and get the result in a couple of hours, Reuters said. 

Previously, all passengers arriving at the Vienna airport were required to present a health certificate with a negative COVID-19 result which is no older than four days, or be quarantined.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Some curbs on public life will remain in place in Russia until a vaccine against the new coronavirus is found, Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said on Sunday.

"Restrictions will be lifted step-by-step but some of them will have to stay in place until there are preventive medicines to contain the spread," he said in an interview to Rossiya-24 television channel.

Murashko warned that Russia could see a second wave of infections and another peak if no herd immunity is achieved. He said the virus would "circulate" in the community for a while.

ANKARA, May 3 (Sputnik) - The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Turkey has increased by 1,670 in the last 24 hours, reaching 126,045, the Health Ministry said on Sunday.

The daily death toll increase is 61, bringing the overall number of deaths to 3,397.

Meanwhile, the number of recoveries has climbed by 4,892 to 63,151.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Paris's Orly Airport may not reopen until September as the coronavirus pandemic continues to weigh on air travel, media said Sunday.

The French daily Les Echoes cited a source familiar with the matter as saying that the airport's capacities will not be required for several more months. It was closed to commercial traffic on 31 March.

France's largest airport, Paris-Charles de Gaulle, will be able to absorb all traffic by operating two or three terminals, the newspaper said.

ROME (Sputnik) - The number of coronavirus-related deaths in Italy rose by 174 on Sunday, the smallest daily addition since mid-March, the figures published by the civil protection agency showed.

The death toll has climbed to 28,884. It rose by 474 on Saturday, when health authorities added previously unreported cases to the tally. The peak was reported on March 27 when 969 people died.

The total number of those infected since the start of the outbreak in the country in February increased by 1,389 to 210,717 in the past day. The number of recovered patients rose by 1,740 to 81,654.

RIGA (Sputnik) - Latvia has recorded eight new COVID-19 cases, bringing the overall number to 879, the country's Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said on Sunday.

"We have done 1,143 tests in the last 24 hours. We have diagnosed eight people with the disease. Since the beginning of the virus' spread through Latvia, we have done 64, 245 tests for COVID-19, with 348 people having recovered from the disease. The official death toll among the infected is 16," the centre's representatives said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States has increased by 29,078 in the last 24 hours, while the death toll has grown by 1,426, according to the database compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

On Saturday, the number of new cases was 34,037.

To date, the university has confirmed over 1.1 million cases in the US, with the death toll of 66,385.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The number of deaths from COVID-19 in the Netherlands has surpassed 5,000, the country's National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) said on Sunday.

In the last 24 hours, the death toll has increased by 69 to 5,056, with a total of confirmed cases growing by 335 to 40,571.

On Saturday, the number of news cases was 445, with 94 new fatalities.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) - Belgium recorded 389 new coronavirus cases in the past day, with further 79 people confirmed or suspected to have died from it, the national crisis response centre said Sunday.

The total number of infections in the small western European country has climbed to 49,906. The death rate has slowed down since passing the peak on 12 April and death toll is now 7,844. Eighty-two deaths were reported on Saturday.

A total of 12,309 coronavirus patients have been discharged from hospitals, including 98 in the past day. Another 77 people were hospitalised in the past 24 hours, with a total of 3,056 people being treated in hospitals.

The Belgian government plans to start easing coronavirus restrictions on Monday, although medical experts warn that social distancing should continue.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The United Kingdom will start testing a contact-tracing smartphone application this week aimed at limiting the spread of COVID-19, media said Sunday.

The transport secretary, Grant Shapps, was quoted as telling the Sky News channel that the app will "go into testing this week on the Isle of Wight," before being deployed nationwide later in May.

The technology is being developed by the digital arm of the UK's National Health Service. It will trace users' contacts and alert them to a possible contact with someone infected.

This is part of the nation's strategy to ease the lockdown after the number of infections leveled off.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Bulgarian authorities on Sunday said that a draft bill to lift the state of emergency, introduced due to the COVID-19 epidemic, would be ready on Monday, 4 May, Sofia Globe newspaper reported, citing Prime Minister Boyko Borissov.

On 13 March, the country's parliament approved the government's initiative to declare an emergency for a month. It was later extended until 13 May.

Borissov has also unveiled measures to soften the restrictions against COVID-19. They included allowing individual outdoor sports and driving schools starting 4 May.

On 6 May, the country will also remove checkpoints for controlling travel between cities. Restaurants will be allowed to reopen open-air terraces after an inspection.

Nevertheless, many restrictive measures will remain in place even after 13 May.

Bulgaria has confirmed a total of 1,588 cases with the death toll at 69.

Transport minister Grant Shapps refused to compare the death tolls in Italy and the United Kingdom when asked by Sky News about the reasons why Britain has become number two in Europe in terms of its death toll. The minister said that the situation was more complex than it sounds, and warned against jumping to conclusions.

"You have to look at the whole picture and that information simply isn't available as yet," Shapps said. "We shouldn't look at the raw data and jump to conclusions."

KIEV (Sputnik) - A total of more than 11,400 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Ukraine, where the death toll from COVID-19 currently stands at 279, the country’s Health Ministry informs.

"In the past 24 hours, 550 new cases have been registered," the ministry said in a statement on its official Telegram channel on Saturday. According to the release, seven new COVID-19 deaths were registered in the country in the past 24 hours.

"As of 09:00 on may 2, there are 11,411 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ukraine, including 279 deaths, 1,498 people have recovered," the health ministry said.

Later in the day, the Health Ministry updated the numbers to 11,913 of confirmed cases as well as 288 fatalities.

Among the 502 newly confirmed cases, 75 are medical workers, Health Minister Maxym Stepanov announced.

"In the last 24 hours, 502 people have been infected. Seventy-five of them are medical workers. For the duration of the pandemic, a total of 2,325 medical workers have been infected," Stepanov said at a Sunday briefing.

Earlier this week, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that the United Nations was seeking $69 million to provide "life-saving assistance" to Ukraine amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The US State Department said on Friday that the United States was allocating $12.1 million in health assistance to Ukraine to help the country’s healthcare institutions deal with the spread of COVID-19.

PRAGUE (Sputnik) - The Czech Republic has registered 18 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, which is a record-low increase, the Health Ministry said Sunday, updating the total to 7,755.

On Saturday, the country reported 55 new cases. On Friday, it was 103.

"Over the past 24 hours, only 18 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in the Czech Republic, and 15 others have recovered, with no [new] deaths registered. The increase in cases in the first half of the week has significantly receded by the weekend," the ministry said.

The country has 7,755 cumulative cases, including 4,049 active ones. A total of 3,461 patients have recovered.

The death toll remains at 245.

The Czech Republic has conducted 253,800 tests since the start of the pandemic.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, who was recently diagnosed with COVID-19, feels good and continues to work remotely under medical supervision, his spokesman said Sunday.

"Mikhail Vladimirovich remains under the supervision of doctors. He continues treatment and feels normal. He is working with documents and in active contact with his colleagues by telephone," Boris Belyakov said.

On Thursday, Mishustin, 54, said that he had tested positive for the virus and would be treated at a medical care facility.

Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov has been appointed as Mishutin’s temporary replacement.

Russia has registered a record 10,633 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the total to 134,687, the national coronavirus response center said Sunday.

"Over the past 24 hours, 10,633 COVID-19 cases have been registered in 85 regions. Of these, 5,345 (or 50.3 percent) have been detected actively, with people showing no clinical symptoms," the center said in a statement.

This brings the total tally to 134,687 (+8.6 percent) in 85 regions across Russia.

Of all the new cases, 5,948 have been registered in Moscow, 822 in the Moscow Region, and 295 in St. Petersburg.

The country's COVID-19 death toll has increased by 58 to 1,280.

A total of 1,626 patients have recovered over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of cured people to 16,639.

The Russian government has lifted a temporary ban on exports of face masks and personal protective equipment, according to the relevant document published on the legal information portal on Saturday.

The decree takes effect immediately upon publication.

Russia suspended exports of a number of medical supplies amid the pandemic, except for items transported for personal use or as part of humanitarian aid. The measures were supposed to remain in effect until 1 June.

China has registered two new COVID-19 cases, with no people having died of the disease over the past 24 hours, the National Health Commission said on Sunday.

Of the new cases, one is imported. It was recorded in the city of Shanghai. The other is a case of local transmission in the northern province of Shanxi.

"The National Health Commission has received information from 31 provinces … about 82,877 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection, including 531 who are still ill (10 people are in serious condition), 77,713 people who have been discharged from hospitals, and 4,633 who have died," the commission reported.

Over the past 24 hours, the country has detected 12 asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers. A total of 968 of such people remain under medical supervision. The commission started reporting figures on asymptomatic cases on April 1.

No new COVID-19 cases or deaths have been reported in Hubei, the province where the virus was first detected in China. Its hospitals are free of coronavirus patients.

Separately, Hong Kong accounts for 1,039 cumulative cases and four fatalities, and Macao for 45 cases. Taiwan has confirmed a total of 432 cases, including six deaths.

Germany has confirmed 793 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, taking the total to 162,496, the Robert Koch Institute said Sunday.

The death toll has risen by 74 to 6,649 people in the given period.

A day earlier, the country recorded 945 new cases and 94 fatalities.

Over 130,000 COVID-19 patients have recovered in Germany since the beginning of the outbreak.

The most coronavirus cases have been recorded in Bavaria (42,792), North Rhine-Westphalia (33,428) and Baden-Wurttemberg (32,291). Berlin has 5,976 cases.

India has confirmed a record 2,644 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, taking the total to 39,980, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Sunday.

The death toll has risen by 83 to 1,301.

A day before, the country reported 2,293 new cases, which was also a record daily increase, and 71 fatalities.

The number of recoveries has grown by 682 to 10,632.

India extended the tough lockdown for two additional weeks on May 1. The quarantine regime prescribes closure of educational institutions, entertainment centers and suspension of public transport, train and subway services. Moreover, the authorities have closed borders between states to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

In areas with less exposure to COVID-19, people are allowed to use public transport and taxi, albeit with certain restrictions.
