An earthquake occured 69 kilometres southwest of Nicaragua's capital, Managua, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) estimated the magnitude as 5.1.

A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck near the west coast of the Central American nation of Nicaragua on Wednesday, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). It caused several buildings in Nicaragua's capital to shake, Reuters reported, citing witnesses.

The EMSC placed the epicentre at sea, 69 kilometres southwest from Managua, 67 km southwest of Jinotepe and 36 km southwest of the coastal town of Masachapa. The depth of the earthquake was 60 kilometres.

No casualties have yet been reported from the site.

Since Nicaragua is situated along the Cocos and Caribbean tectonic plates, the country is prone to earthquakes. The latest notable earthquake took place in the country in October 2014, and had a magnitude of 7.3.
