Moscow is not ruling out that the United States is preparing the ground for withdrawing from the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday. Zakharova said that the US has a recognizable pattern of making accusations, including through bogus stories and leaks, and then paving the way for taking certain steps to pursue its goals.
She emphasized that the treaty is one of the most crucial documents related to nuclear non-proliferation.
On Saturday, the Washington Post newspaper reported, citing sources close to the matter, that US President Donald Trump has discussed the possibility of conducting the country’s first nuclear test in 28 years.
According to the report, the issue was discussed on May 15 during a meeting of senior officials in charge of national security.
