The United States remains the nation worst hit by coronavirus, with more than 2 million confirmed cases and over 115,700 deaths. It is followed by Brazil, where more than 867,000 people have been infected, of whom at least 43,332 have died.

On Saturday, Beijing authorities announced they had shut down the city's major wholesale food market Xinfadi after over 40 people linked to the market tested positive for the coronavirus. On Sunday, Beijing authorities said that the Chinese capital was in "wartime emergency mode".
BEIJING (Sputnik) - China registered 49 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, one COVID-19 patient recovered over that period, the country's National Health Commission said on Monday, a day after Beijing authorities said the city was in "wartime emergency mode" after a new COVID-19 outbreak started at a major wholesale market.
Out of the 49 new cases reported on Monday, 39 are local (36 of them registered in Beijing), while 10 are imported. According to the commission, China registered 18 asymptomatic coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours.
The country's total number of confirmed coronavirus cases now stands at 83,181, the death toll is 4,634. The total number of recovered individuals in China stands at 78,370.
MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) - Health authorities in Mexico have confirmed 4,183 new coronavirus cases and 693 fatalities over the past day as half of the country's states brace for a partial abatement of restrictions, Mexican Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell said on Monday.
"The daily increase in the number of cases was 4,183, which is 2.9 percent of the cumulative toll, up from 2.5 percent from the day before", Lopez-Gatell said at a press conference broadcast on the ministry's Twitter account.
According to the statement, the cumulative toll in Mexico has now reached 146,873 cases, including 17,141 fatalities and 22,398 active cases.
The plurality of active cases are concentrated in the capital of Mexico City (4,566) and the state of Mexico (2,703), as stated by the deputy minister.
Health authorities are currently looking into 52,636 suspected cases and 1,531 suspected deaths linked to the coronavirus, according to the statement.
LONDON (Sputnik) - Non-food stores in the United Kingdom are due to resume operations on Monday after almost three months of coronavirus-impelled closure along with a set of other measures marking the country's return to pre-pandemic life in line with Prime Minister Boris Johnson's order in the end of May.
All stores are expected to ensure social distancing of 2 meters (6 feet) by means of applying special floor marking and controlling the number of customers, as well as to provide staff and customers with personal protective tools and use cashless payments where possible.
Another measure to take effect on Monday is the mandatory wearing of masks in public transport, whereas it should not necessarily be medical masks but rather a fabric cover on mouth and nose, as announced by State Secretary for Transport Grant Shapps earlier this months. Shapps has also urged people to work from home and avoid public transport whenever possible.
The UK mandating citizens to wear masks in public, one of the last countries to do so, occurs despite the UK government's earlier statements on that masks are of no proven effect in protecting one from contracting the coronavirus.
Also on Monday, secondary school students who are due to take exams this year will have the opportunity to meet with teachers, according to Johnson. UK schools have been closed since 20 March. Primary schools reopened in June, but the majority of school students are not expected to return to classes until September.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Brazil now has over 867,000 confirmed coronavirus cases with the country's total COVID-19 death toll standing at over 43,000, according to the Health Ministry, which reported more than 17,000 new cases over the past 24 hours.
On Saturday, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Brazil stood at 850,514 while the total death toll was 42,720. On Sunday, the health ministry said that 17,110 new cases and 612 new fatalities had been confirmed, bringing Brazil’s total number of cases up to 867,624 and the total death toll up to 43,332.
On Saturday, Brazil reported a higher increase over a 24-hour-period: 21,704 new COVID-19 cases and 892 new coronavirus deaths.
According to the health ministry, the COVID-19 mortality rate in Brazil is five percent. Nearly 388,500 people have recovered from COVID-19 in Brazil.
"A total of 53 patients who were diagnosed with pneumonia and has a positive coronavirus infection test have died in Moscow", the Moscow coronavirus response centre said Sunday.
A day earlier, the daily toll was 50 dead.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The global number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus infection has surpassed 7.6 million, with over 427,000 fatalities being reported since the start of the outbreak, according to the latest data provided by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Sunday.
The cumulative global toll of confirmed cases has increased by 137,526 over the past day, down from 142,672 the day before, to 7,690,708, according to the WHO.
Over the past 24 hours, 4,281 people died from COVID-19 worldwide, down from 5,055 the day before, taking the death toll to 427,630.
The majority of cases and deaths — 3.71 million and 199,252, respectively — are still concentrated in the Americas. The United States remains the worst-hit country having the highest single count of cases, over 2 million, and fatalities, 114,466.
TOKYO (Sputnik) - Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo on Sunday called on residents not to relax with the onset of hot weather, since high temperatures do not mean the absence of the coronavirus infection, and cited the situation in Qatar with a traditionally hot climate.
"Along with providing support to health facilities, it is also necessary to expand the testing system. Look at the situation in Qatar, where it is extremely hot and the virus is spreading. Therefore, we cannot relax just because summer has come," Abe said, as aired by the NHK broadcaster.
After a downward trend in the second half of May when less than 10 new cases were confirmed per day on average, the infection rate started to increase in early June. On Sunday, Japan confirmed 75 new cases of the coronavirus, of which 47 were reported in Tokyo — the highest daily rise in the capital since May 5.
The overall number of COVID-19 cases in Japan has reached 18,241, including 940 fatalities and 16,298 recoveries.
Restaurants will reopen in the Paris region, the president said.

The death toll from coronavirus infection in Italy rose by 44 on Sunday, bringing the total to 34,345, the Civil Protection Agency said.
This is the world's fourth-highest COVID-19 death toll after the US, Brazil and UK, according to Johns Hopkins University.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The United Kingdom’s COVID-19 death toll has risen by 36 over the past 24 hours, marking the lowest number of fatalities since March 21, to 41,698, the Health Ministry said on Sunday.
On Saturday, 181 new fatalities were reported. Such a dramatic decrease can be explained by the fact that on weekends, statistics are usually better since the reporting system does not work at its full potential. Unaccounted cases are added to statistics for the following days.
According to the health authorities, 1,514 more people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 over the past day, up from 1,425 the day before, bringing the country's tally to 295,889.
Since the outbreak, as many as 6,772,602 tests have been conducted in the country, the ministry added.
The United States has confirmed 25,540 new cases of the coronavirus over the past 24 hours, up from 25,396 the day before, which brings the country's tally to 2,074,526, according to the latest data provided by Johns Hopkins University on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the death toll from the disease has increased by 767 over the past day, down from 846 on Saturday, to 115,436.
According to the university, as many as 556,606 COVID-19 patients have fully recovered from the disease.
Globally, 7,808,773 people have been infected with COVID-19 since the outbreak, including over 3.7 million recoveries and more than 430,000 fatalities.
The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus infection in Africa has topped 230,000 and over 6,000 people have died from the disease, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Sunday.
According to the WHO, a total of 230,454 people have been diagnosed with the coronavirus in Africa, while 6,218 COVID-19 patients have died. More than 106,000 people have recovered since the outbreak.
The majority of cases has been reported in South Africa — 65,736. It is followed by Egypt with 41,303 cases and Nigeria with 15,181 infections. Meanwhile the highest fatality rates — 1,423, 1,422 and 760 — have been registered in South Africa, Egypt and Algeria, respectively.
The number of people who died from COVID-19 in Iran over the past 24 hours exceeded 100 for the first time since 13м April, with the total toll is now at the level of 8,837, the country's Health Ministry said on Sunday.
On Saturday, Iran registered 2,410 COVID-19 cases and 71 related fatalities.
According to the Health authorities, over the past day, a total of 2,472 new cases were identified, and 107 people died from the disease.
The overall number of coronavirus cases in Iran now amounts to 187,427, while over 148,000 people recovered from the disease.
Iran started to gradually ease the lockdown in mid-April. Since then, the Middle Eastern country allowed most businesses to reopen and lifted the ban on travel between provinces.
Spain will reopen its borders with the Schengen Area countries except Portugal starting from June 22, media reported on Sunday.
According to the EFE news agency, borders with Portugal will be officially reopen on July 1. The relevant announcement was made by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez during videoconference with heads of the country's autonomous communities, the media said.
Meanwhile, according to El Pais newspaper, the reopening of borders will take place on June 21.
It is expected that official date of the reopening would be announced by the prime minister later in the day during a press conference.
Russia is exiting the coronavirus pandemic with minimal losses, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.
"We are talking about the fact that at certain costs, problems, and losses, but still we are, at a normal pace, so to speak, are working to get out of this coronavirus situation confidently, with minimal losses," Putin said, as broadcast by Rossiya 1 TV channel on Sunday.
The Russian president also added that the federal government and regional authorities were working "as one team" during the pandemic.
Tokyo reported 47 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, the highest daily rise since May 5, Governor Yuriko Koike said on Sunday during a press conference.
According to Koike, 18 out of 47 COVID-19 carriers have a history of visiting city’s nightclubs. The local authorities have asked people working in nightclubs and other similar entertainment establishments to regularly take coronavirus tests.
After a downward trend in the second half of May when less than 10 new cases were confirmed per day on average, the infection rate started to increase in early June. On Saturday, Tokyo reported 24 new cases.
Overall, the number of confirmed cases in the city reached 5,544, while the country-wide coronavirus tally increased to 18,220.
"We all want to see travel open again, of course we do, and like everything else we want to make sure we have the right measures at the right time informed by the science and everything else that we have to consider," finance minister Rishi Sunak said.
"We are looking at all options to ensure that that is possible and people have got suggestions about how we might be able to open up some travel corridors over time and so the transport secretary is actively looking at all of those options," he added.
The UK government will review its two-metre social distancing rule as a matter of urgency as it tries to help the country's economy recover from a 25% collapse amid the COVID-19 crisis, finance minister Rishi Sunak said.
Ukrainian Health Minister Maksym Stepanov on Sunday announced that 648 new coronavirus cases were detected in the country continuing the upward trend of infection rates registered over the four past days.
The overall tally has now reached 31,154 cases while nine additional fatalities takes the death toll to 889 since the beginning of the outbreak in Ukraine.
Capital city Kiev remain the most highly infected part of the country with 3,904 cases registered in the city and 1,995 in the surrounding region. The westernmost Lviv region comes in second with 2,797 cases overall.
The minister detailed that over 334,000 coronavirus tests have been conducted since March.
Russia confirmed 8,835 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, bringing the overall tally to 528,964 the national coronavirus response center said on Sunday.
"Over the past 24 hours, Russia has confirmed 8,835 COVID-19 cases in 84 regions, of which 3,198 (36.2 percent) have been detected actively, with people showing no clinical symptoms," the response center said in a statement.
Russia has so far recorded 528,964 COVID-19 cases in 85 regions (1.7 percent), the center added.
Of all the new cases, 1,477 have been registered in Moscow, 717 in the Moscow region and 256 in Saint Petersburg.
At the same time, Russia reported 119 coronavirus-related deaths on Saturday, including 50 in Moscow and 29 in Saint Petersburg. The overall COVID-19 death toll in Russia reached 6,948.
Moreover, Russia registered 5,409 recoveries over the past day, including 2,133 in Moscow and 839 in the Moscow region. The overall number of recoveries reached 280,050 since the start of the outbreak.
The Chinese capital is in the "emergency mode" amid the new COVID-19 cluster at the Xinfadi, the largest wholesale market in the city, Xu Hejian, spokesperson for the municipal government and director of its information office, said on Sunday.
Earlier in the day, China registered 57 new coronavirus cases, the largest day rise in almost two months, and 36 of all new cases were connected to the Beijing market.
"Yesterday [Saturday] morning, the Beijing COVID-19 response center held the 68th meeting, during the meeting, it was acknowledged that confirmed cases of coronavirus infection were detected in the city over the past few days, and besides, they are all related to the wholesale market, Beijing already entered an emergency mode," Xu said during a press conference.
Xu added that it was essential to prevent the cluster from growing further in order to not let the pandemic to spread.
The authorities closed Xinfadi on Saturday after authorities discovered 46 asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers linked to the market following a mass testing. Moreover, the lockdown was reimposed in the Fengtai of the capital, where the market is located. The city authorities have said that all people who work at Xinfadi or visited the place since May 30 will take nucleic acid tests to detect if they are infected with COVID-19.
One day before Uzbekistan is due to end its lockdown, the Central Asian country confirmed 97 new coronavirus cases, down from 128 on Saturday, and thus the overall tally reached 4,994, the Health Ministry said on Sunday.
In May, Uzbekistan extended the coronavirus-related restriction until June 15, but the country has already lifted some measures. In particular, movement between regions is allowed, places of worship are reopened and public transport is operating again.
"As of 14 June, 2020, 10:00 [local time, 05:00 GMT] the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Uzbekistan is 4,994," the ministry said in its official Telegram channel.
No COVID-19 carriers died over the given period, and the death toll remained at 19. At the same time, the number of recoveries reached 3,874.
Kyrgyzstan registered 78 new coronavirus cases in the past day, a noticeable jump compared to previous days where the daily infection rate hovered between 30 and 40.
According to a coronavirus response center source, four of those were imported from abroad while 39 patients tested positive while being monitored with suspicion of infection. The source of infection for the other 35 patients is yet to be determined.
This brings the total infected in the Central Asian country to 2,285 of whom 438 are medical workers. The death toll now stands at 27 while 1,791 people have been discharged with recoveries.
Health authorities in Germany have recorded 247 new COVID-19 cases and six fatalities over the past 24 hours, marking a decrease in both parameters from the day before, the Robert Koch Institute said on Sunday.
The latest situation update from Germany on Saturday stated a daily increase of 348 new cases and 18 fatalities.
The overall number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany has now reached 186,269, and the death toll has reached 8,787, according to the situation update.
According to Robert Koch, which compiles the statistics for the German government, the majority of cases have been registered in the state of Bavaria (47,626), followed by North Rhine-Westphalia (39,233) and Baden-Wurttemberg (35,090). The German capital city of Berlin has so far confirmed 7,282 COVID-19 cases.
The total number of coronavirus cases in India has risen to 3,20,922 after a record 11,929 new infections were reported over the past 24 hours, according to figures released by India's Ministry of Health.
