MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) - Six people were killed and another 30 injured in a strong earthquake in Mexico, authorities said.

Five deaths were reported by the Mexican Security and Civil Protection Secretariat. The sixth death was reported by Oaxaca Governor Alejandro Murat. All fatal cases were recorded in Oaxaca. The national civil protection authority, in turn, said more than 30 had been injured.

One person died from a building collapse in Santa María Huatulco in the community of Manantial, a 70-year-old male was killed by the roof of a house in the municipality of San Juan Ozolotepec, another male was killed by a fence in San Agustín Amatengo, and a Pemex worker died in a hospital from injuries.

The Civil Protection Agency also added, citing the National Seismological Service, that 653 aftershocks were reported, the largest being a 4.9 magnitude.

The Mexican agency went on to say that three tsunami warnings have been issued by the Navy with broadcast times of 10:33 pm (15:00 GMT), 12:35 (17:35 GMT) and 14:08 (19:00 GMT), reporting that “anomalous variations in sea level of up to 113 centimetres above tidal level are expected in the region of the earthquake generation”.

It said that a power outage took place throughout the state capital, the city of Oaxaca, but power was restored later. At least two federal highways were closed due to the calamity.

Tremors seriously damaged five hospitals in the south of the country. The earthquake was felt in 11 states of the country.

Later, Governor of Oaxaca State Alejandro Murat asked the country's authorities to declare a state of emergency in the region.

"I made a formal request to declare a state of emergency in Oaxaca because of the earthquake we experienced today with magnitude 7.5", he said in a video address posted on Twitter.

On 23 June, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, with the epicentre located 7.4 miles southeast of the city of La Crucecita.

The Latin American state is located on the seismically active territory. In May, two earthquakes of 6.1 and 5.5-magnitude hit the country, though no tsunami warning was issued at that time.
