5.5-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Off Alaska Coast, USGS Says
09:26 GMT 05.07.2020 (Updated: 13:08 GMT 09.02.2023) There are no reports of damage or casualties caused by the seismic activity so far. Authorities in Alaska have not issued a tsunami warning in relation to the tremor.
A 5.5-magnitude earthquake rattled Alaska at 8:53:35 (UTC), the United States Geological Survey reported.
The epicentre of the quake was registered some 219 km south of the town of Sand Point at a depth of ten kilometres.
In January, a strong earthquake with a reviewed magnitude of 6.2 hit west of the city of Adak in Alaska.
The northernmost US state is one of the most seismically active in the country. The second-most powerful earthquake on record was registered there in 1964, measuring 9.2 on the Richter scale. The powerful tremor caused massive damage and triggered a tsunami.
