Numerous countries have imposed lockdowns and travel bans again, bracing for a potential second wave of coronavirus, in order to curb the spread of the disease, while scientists around the world are working diligently to develop vaccines.

The pandemic continues to spread across the world; 29,190,000 have been infected globally, with the death toll surpassing 927,000, according to Johns Hopkins University. The highest number of confirmed cases has been reported in the United States, India, and Brazil.

The United Kingdom and Spain are the main centres of the COVID-19 outbreak in Western Europe: Spain has the highest number of infections in the region, while Britain has recorded a high death toll, resulting in the re-imposition of stringent pandemic restrictions earlier this week.

MOSCOW, September 15 (Sputnik) - Moscow has registered 10 deaths of patients infected with COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, bringing the Russian capital's death toll to 5,016, the city's coronavirus response center said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Another 10 patients, who were diagnosed with pneumonia and tested positive for the coronavirus infection, died in Moscow," the center said.

In the previous day, 13 people infected with the coronavirus died in Moscow.

"The Covid-19 pandemic continues to claim many victims among journalists. At least 366 journalists from 47 countries have died from the coronavirus since early March", the Press Emblem Campaign (PEC) said in Geneva on Tuesday at the start of the Human Rights Council's session.

The leaders in COVID-19 fatalities among journalists are Peru, Ecuador and India, with 82, 40 and 36 deaths, respectively. Five journalists are said to have died from the virus in Russia. According to PEC General Secretary Blaise Lempen, the growth of cases has been particularly high in India in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, 54 journalists were killed from January 1 to September 10, bringing the total death toll to 420.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russia's Chumakov Federal Scientific Center for the Research and Development of Immune-and-Biological Products is proceeding with clinical trials of its live weakened vaccine against COVID-19, the head of the national public health watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, said on Tuesday.

"The Chumakov Institute is ... launching clinical trials of the live weakened vaccine, and this is also a good example. I cannot say for sure how many [vaccines] are needed, but we certainly need many good vaccines, many different vaccines, since people will show different reactions to different compositions," Anna Popova said at a meeting at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

MOSCOW, September 15 (Sputnik) - Russia has registered 5,529 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours (5,509 yesterday), which brings the cumulative total to 1,073,849, the country's coronavirus response centre said on Tuesday.

"Over the past 24 hours, Russia has confirmed 5,529 COVID-19 cases in 84 regions, of which 1,245 (22.5 percent) have been detected actively, with people showing no clinical symptoms," the response centre said in a statement, adding that the total tally has reached 1,073,849.

SEOUL (Sputnik) - The South Korean government will secure enough of the COVID-19 vaccine to administer it to 60 percent of the country's population, some 30 million people, Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said on Tuesday.

"The government, in cooperation with international organisations and foreign companies, will ensure the supply of about 30 million doses of the [COVID-19] vaccine for about 60 percent of the country's population, depending on the situation with the development of vaccines, measures will be taken to conduct additional purchases," Chung said, as broadcast by the Yonhap news agency.

The prime minister also instructed the government to further secure a "sustainable" supply of vaccines, support vaccine development in the country and develop a vaccination plan.
