Mass Protests Over Caricatures of Prophet Muhammad in Beirut - Video
The escalation between Paris and Muslim countries occurred earlier this month after the brutal killing of French history teacher Samuel Paty on 16 October by a radicalised teenager for displaying caricatures depicting the Prophet Muhammad in class. The incident was followed by a gruesome assault in Nice this week that claimed the lives of three.
A mass demonstration calling to respect Islam and its Prophet Muhammad hit the Lebanese capital after numerous Muslim countries and organisations slammed French President Emmanuel Macron for criticising Islamism and urging to "free Islam in France from foreign influence and strengthen control on the mosques' funding", calling it an attack on Muslims. The president also cited "freedom of the press" when commenting on the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo's decision to re-publish cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.
