ANKARA (Sputnik) - Turkey begins the first phase of the clinical trial of its coronavirus vaccine, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said Thursday.

"Turkey began the trial of its own coronavirus vaccine with human subjects today. The first phase is being held in the Erciyes University," the minister told reporters.

Russia became the first country to register the world's first COVID-19 vaccine, Sputnik V, on 11 August. It was developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute and the Russian Direct Investment Fund.

In early-September, the Turkish health minister said that Ankara could issue a permit for trials of Russian vaccine against coronavirus infection.
