As Austria is entering a stricter lockdown today, the state of affairs in Germany is "serious, even very serious," as Chancellor Angela Merkel put it on Tuesday, adding that restricting contact between people was one of the toughest decisions she has had to make in office. Speaking at an economic forum hosted by the German daily newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Merkel warned that 2021 was going to be "demanding."
Across the Atlantic, the US has now recorded more than 100,000 daily infections for two weeks straight and on Monday clocked over 166,000 new cases, according to data from the COVID Tracking Project.
According to Worldometers, the coronavirus is currently affecting 217 countries and territories around the world.
