Pro-Choice, Pro-Life Rallies in Buenos Aires as Argentine Senate Approves Bill to Legalise Abortion
06:06 GMT 30.12.2020 (Updated: 18:57 GMT 19.10.2022) Currently, abortions in Argentina, when induced, are considered a crime against a life and a person, and can be punished with up to fifteen years behind bars. Abortions can only be legally conducted in the country if the pregnancy threatens the life or health of the mother, or is a result of rape.
Protesters for and against the right to abortion are hitting the streets of Buenos Aires as the Senate voted by 38 in favor to 29 against with one abstention to approve a bill allowing the procedure through the 14th week of pregnancy.
The bill had already been passed by the Chamber of Deputies with 131 votes in favour, 117 votes against and six abstentions.
