The United Kingdom finally left the European Union on 31 January, more than three and a half years after the June 2016 referendum that started the Brexit process.

On 24 December, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, announced that they had reached a deal on the future relations between the bloc and London. The parties have thus managed to prevent the introduction of the World Trade Organisation's rules, including customs tariffs and full border checks for goods flowing across the English Channel.
