The base was returned to the Iraqi Air Force in 2011 after the US withdrawal from the country. In August, the air base was similarly hit by three rockets, although no casualties were reported.

Three rockets have landed inside the Balad Air Base north of Baghdad injuring two employees, the Al-Sumaria newspaper reported, citing an Iraqi security source.

One of the injured employees is a citizen of Iraq and the nationality of the second has not yet been identified, the source added.

No group has claimed responsibility for the incident as of yet.

The rocket strike comes just under a week after another base hosting US forces came under attack.

On Monday, a volley of rockets hit the Erbil Air Base in Iraqi Kurdistan, killing a civilian contractor and hurting nine other people. A Shiite militant group reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.

Balad Air Base previously came under attack in August. It was hit by three Katyusha rockets, but the incident did not result in any casualties or damages.
