A 9.0-magnitude earthquake that hit Japan in March 2011 triggered a massive tsunami and the meltdown of three nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant in Fukushima prefecture.

Live from the city of Rikuzentakata, in Japan's Iwate Prefecture as locals pay tribute to the victims of the 2011 earthquake and the tsunami that hit the northeast of the country.

A moment of silence will be observed at 14:46 local time (05:46 GMT), when the earthquake struck exactly ten years ago, triggering a tsunami.

A 9.0 magnitude earthquake and a tsunami triggered the Fukushima disaster in March 2011, which released large amounts of radiation into the air.

Around 100,000 people had to flee their homes and 19,000 died as a result of the disaster.
