Zelensky Has Not Recently Requested Talks With Putin, Kremlin Says
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has not requested negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the past few days, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday, commenting on media reports that Zelensky had asked Putin to discuss the escalation in Donbass.
"No, I have not seen any requests in the past few days," Peskov told reporters.
"We hope that political wisdom will prevail in Kiev, things will not take a serious turn, and provocative actions will die down ... As for reducing tensions and preventing a potential war, Vladimir Putin always has something to say," Peskov added, when asked if Putin had something to tell the Ukrainian leader.
Over the past few weeks, the Ukrainian government has reportedly amassed military forces on the border in the country's east, with the president stating that only Kiev's membership in NATO could guarantee peace in the region.
Russian officials have been repeatedly vocal about the increase in tensions in eastern Ukraine. Dmitry Peskov said earlier that the situation in the war-torn country remains "unstable" and stressed that full-scale hostilities could resume.
