The UN Security Council will meet on May 16 to discuss the escalation between Israel and Palestine in the Gaza Strip, US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said in a statement.
"The UN Security Council will meet to discuss the situation in Israel and Gaza on Sunday," Thomas-Greenfield said on Thursday via Twitter on Thursday. "The US will continue to actively engage in diplomacy at the highest levels to try to de-escalate tensions."
The mission indicated that the meeting was called for by Norway, China and Tunisia "with broad support."
A meeting was initially pushed for Friday, however, the United States desired a meeting to take place on Tuesday.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters the US was "open to discussions," and that initial indications suggested a meeting would be held the following week.
The UNSC has previously held two meetings regarding the escalating tensions.
