China will continue to closely cooperate with all member states at the UN Security Council to achieve the adoption of a unified statement on the escalation in the Gaza Strip, UN Security Council President for May Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jung told reporters after an emergency meeting on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the Security Council was not able to issue a statement on the renewed Israeli-Palestinian conflict due to the obstruction of one country, urging the United States to take a "just position" on the matter.

"As the UN Security Council President for the month of May, China will continue to push the Security Council to take prompt action and to speak in one voice," Zhang said. "We must take actions and end the current crisis, especially through political dialogue, and China will continue to work closely with Norway, Tunisia and other members to seek the adoption of a statement by the Security Council."

After the conclusion of the Security Council's meeting, China along with Tunisia and Norway issued a press element, in which they called for an immediate halt to hostilities contributing to the rising number of civilians casualties on both sides of the conflict.

"We demanded the immediate cessation of all acts of violence, provocation, incitement, destruction and eviction plans. We urge both sides to work to urgently to lower tensions and end the violence," Norway's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mona Juul said on behalf of the three countries.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson condemned on Sunday anti-Semitic rhetoric captured on a viral video from London showing people yelling anti-Jewish statements from inside cars covered in Palestinian flags.

Demonstrations in support for both Israel and Palestine were held in many different countries as armed hostilities continued around Gaza Strip throughout the week. The footage was released on social media earlier in the day of a convoy of cars covered with Palestinian flags passing through London whose drivers and passengers yelled anti-Semitic slurs and threats.

"There is no place for antisemitism in our society. Ahead of Shavuot, I stand with Britain's Jews who should not have to endure the type of shameful racism we have seen today," Johnson tweeted.

The Metropolitan Police have already launched an investigation to identify those responsible.

"We are aware of a video appearing to show anti-Semitic language being shouted from a convoy of cars in the St John's Wood area this afternoon. Officers are carrying out urgent enquiries to identify those responsible. This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated," the police wrote on Twitter.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed concerns about the video, saying that there is no place for behaviour that "incites anti-Jewish or anti-Muslim hatred" in London.

About 3,100 rockets have been fired from the Gaza Strip at Israel so far, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said on Sunday, adding that 450 of them fell before crossing the border.

"As of 7 p.m. [16:00 GMT], some 3,100 rockets have been fired from the Gaza Strip at Israel, including some 450 failed launches that fell in the Gaza Strip," the IDF said in a statement.

The Israeli military added that about 1,210 rockets were intercepted by Israel's air defence system Iron Dome.

Israel's armed forces have struck 1,500 targets in the Gaza Strip in recent days, dealing a heavy blow to the infrastructure of Palestine's Hamas movement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday.

"Our campaign against terrorist organizations continues in full force. We will make Hamas pay a very high price for its aggression. In recent days, the Israel Defense Forces have hit more than 1,500 targets," Netanyahu told a briefing at army headquarters.

The United States should engage more actively in the Middle East Peace process and depart from the Israel-favoring stance of the previous US administration, Permanent Observer for the League of Arab States (LAS) to the United Nations Maged Abdelaziz said in a Security Council meeting on Sunday.

"The League of Arab States calls on the United States of America, in particular, to President Joe Biden’s administration, to engage in a more active and influential and deeper way in the Middle East peace process, an engagement that would dispel delusions created by the past US administration that Israel would get everything while Palestinians would get nothing," Abdelaziz said.

Hamas and PIJ have fired 2968 rockets at Israel in the past week. 439 of those rockets misfired and crashed into Gaza, causing around 20 Palestinian casualties.

A car was deliberately rammed into Israeli police officers in Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah district, where clashes with Palestinians originally began, leaving six officers with injuries of varying severity, Israeli Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said on Sunday.

"Six policemen were injured in an attempted car terrorist attack in the Sheikh Jarrah area in Jerusalem. Two of them are in moderate state, four were injured lightly. The terrorist was shot dead on the spot," Rosenfeld told reporters.

Unrest in the Jerusalem neighbourhood was triggered earlier in May by an Israeli court ruling the eviction of several Arab families from their homes. Palestinians staged mass protests, prompting Israeli officers to use force. Tensions escalated on May 10, spiralling into armed confrontations between Israel and Gaza.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Sunday invited representatives from Israel and the Palestinian Authority to come to China for direct peace negotiations to settle the ongoing Gaza escalation.

“China will scale up efforts to promote peace talks and earnestly perform our duty as the Council’s president,” Wang said.

“We reaffirm our invitation to Palestine and Israel to continue that dialogue in China and welcome representatives of the two sides to come to China for direct negotiations," the minister continued.

Israel's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Gilad Erdan said on Sunday that the Palestinian Hamas group premeditated the ongoing escalation in Gaza to gain political power.

"This is not the first time that Hamas has indiscriminately fired deadly missiles into Israeli civilians while hiding behind ... civilians, but this time it's different. It was completely premeditated, but by Hamas in order to gain political power," Erdan said during an emergency UN Security Council meeting.

About 10,000 residents of the Gaza Strip had to leave their homes because of the Israeli airstrikes, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said on Sunday.

"More than 10,000 people in the Gaza Strip were forced to leave their homes as a result of barbaric bombings, hundreds of buildings were destroyed," al-Maliki stated at an emergency meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at the level of foreign ministers.

The Palestinian diplomat accused Israel of "pursuing an apartheid policy towards the Palestinians" and called for the creation of an "international front" that would confront Israel's "aggression against the Palestinian people."

The meeting was initiated by Saudi Arabia in a video-conference format as Israeli-Palestinian armed hostilities have not ceased for already one week.

"Hamas misjudged the strength of our response," Israel's army chief Aviv Kochavi said on Sunday, adding that Gaza had since been enduring an aerial bombardment of unprecedented "intensity".

Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres on Sunday described the destruction of media offices in the Gaza Strip as a result of Israeli airstrikes as "extremely concerning," stressing that journalists should be able to work safely in conflict environments.

As armed hostilities between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas continued throughout the week, among the buildings destroyed in Gaza by Israeli rockets was a high-rise lodging offices of international media agencies, including The Associated Press and Al Jazeera.

"Journalists must be allowed to work free of fear and harassment. The destruction of media offices in Gaza is extremely concerning," Guterres said in opening remarks to a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East.

The UN chief decried as well the targeting of humanitarian infrastructure.

"I am appalled by the attack on a refugee camp in Gaza, in which 10 members of one family were killed. Humanitarian installations must be protected," Guterres said.

UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland called on Israel to abide by international humanitarian law and exercise maximum restraint to save lives of civilians while conducting its military operations in Gaza.

"Israeli authorities must abide by international humanitarian law principles governing armed conflict, including the proportional use of force, exercising maximum restraint to spare civilians and civilian objects, the conduct of the military operation," Wennesland said at an emergency UN Security Council meeting on the renewed Israeli-Palestinian escalation.

Air raid sirens sound every 12 minutes on average in the Israeli city of Ashkelon, one of the hot spots of ongoing hostilities in the Gaza Strip, Maj. Gen. Ori Gordin, the home front commander of Israel Defence Forces, said on Sunday.

"The number of rockets fire at Ashkelon is 580 in five days. On average, as you can see, every 12 minutes a rocket is fired at Ashkelon and sirens go off. And civilians — children, old people and women — must go and hide in a bomb shelter," Gordin said at a briefing.

According to him, Palestinian militant groups have significantly increased the range and intensity of attacks, especially in the central regions, compared to previous flare-ups in 2019, 2014, 2012 and 2008. More rockets were fired at Tel Aviv in the past day and night alone than during the entire 2014 operation, Gordin said.

Tensions escalated on the border between Israel and Palestine's Gaza Strip on May 10. Israel and the Palestinian Authority must both stop fighting immediately, Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres said on Sunday.

"Fighting must stop. It must stop immediately. Rockets and mortars on one side and aerial and artillery bombardments on the other must stop. I appeal to all parties to heed this call," Guterres said during opening remarks to a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East.

The UN chief added that the organization was "actively engaging all sides [to the conflict] towards an immediate ceasefire."

"It [the fighting] has the potential to unleash an uncontainable security and humanitarian crisis and to further foster extremism, not only in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel but in the region as a whole, potentially creating a new locus of dangerous instability," he added.

UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland said on Sunday Hamas' and other militants' firing of rockets into populated civilian neighbourhoods in Israel violates international humanitarian law and must immediately stop.

"Hamas' and other militants' discriminate launching of rockets and mortars from highly populated civilian neighbourhoods into civilian populated centres in Israel violates international humanitarian law and must seize immediately," Wennesland said during an emergency UN Security Council meeting.

The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates confirmed on Sunday the detention of two citizens on the border with Israel, saying that the embassy in Tel Aviv was working for their release.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli police detained two people armed with knives who allegedly crossed the border from Jordan at night. They were sent for interrogation.

"The foreign ministry confirms that it is monitoring the situation with the detention of two Jordanian citizens in Israel. The Jordanian embassy in Tel Aviv is in constant contact with the Israeli authorities and is working on the release of the two citizens," the ministry said in a statement.

The detention comes as tensions keep high between Israel and the Palestinian Authority's Gaza Strip, with pro-Palestinian rallies taking place in neighbouring countries, as well as across the world.

 Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz met with a US delegation led by a senior Department of State official on Sunday to discuss the armed confrontation with the Gaza Strip.

"This morning, Defense Minister Benny Gantz held a meeting with a US delegation led by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Israel and Palestinian Affairs Hady Amr. The minister asked the delegation to convey to [US] President [Joe] Biden his deep appreciation for America's commitment to Israel's right and duty of self-defense," Gantz' office said.

The defence minister said, as quoted in the press release, that the goal of Israel's ongoing military campaign was to "restore long-term calm on Israeli borders and the safety of its citizens."

Tensions flared up on the border of Israel and the Palestinian enclave in the evening of May 10. As of Sunday morning, some 2,900 rockets have been launched from the Gaza Strip into Israel, with 1,150 of them intercepted, while the Israeli military targeted hundreds of rockets at what it claimed were Hamas infrastructure buildings across the border.

Since the start of the hostilities, 181 Palestinians, including 52 children, were killed and over 1,200 others were injured, while Israel reported 10 people killed and 50 others seriously injured.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) demanded urgent action from the UN Security Council ahead of the meeting on Israel-Palestine armed hostilities on Sunday to stop the attacks on journalists in the Gaza Strip.

IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger accused Israel of breaching its obligations under UN Security Council Resolution 1738, which requires that States provide protection to journalists in conflict environments. Meanwhile, more than 30 media workers have been attacked or detained in the Gaza Strip and internet services were blocked, according to the statement.

"This outrageous targeting of media must stop," Bellanger was quoted as saying.

The organization said it has repeatedly asked the Israeli authorities to properly investigate attacks and targeted killings of Palestinian journalists, stressing that impunity will likely lead to more attacks in the future both in Israel and in Palestine.

The Israeli air force is ready to continue the operation in the Gaza Strip until it entirely destroys the "infrastructure of terror," Israeli Ambassador to Russia Alexander Ben Zvi said on Sunday.

"This is a war on terror. The shelling from Gaza continues all the time, more than 2,000 rockets were fired, attacks are going on all the time in almost all southern areas of Israel, up to Tel Aviv. And this is life: every time you have to hide in a bomb shelter, then go out and continue with your day. But we should not get used to it," Ben Zvi said at a solidarity rally organized by the Russian Jewish Congress.

The ambassador stressed that if the operation ends before "the entire infrastructure of terror is destroyed," the attacks will resume in the future.

"We cannot afford to do this again, to allow keeping our country hostage, and we will do everything to eradicate it," he added.

The number of Palestinians killed in Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip has risen to 174, including 47 children, the enclave's health ministry said Sunday.

"174 people were killed, including 47 children and 29 women, 1200 people were injured," the ministry said in a statement.

Doctors expect the number of casualties to rise as medical and rescue services still continue searching the rubble of buildings in Gaza.

According to the latest reports, about 2,900 rockets have been fired from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory since the start of the hostilities on May 10. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas stated that Israel has been exercising its right to protect the population from rocket attacks launched by Hamas, German Bild am Sonntag newspaper reported on Sunday.

According to Maas, Israel has the right to self-defence and to protect its people from Hamas "rocket terror," Bild am Sonntag said. The minister stressed that the next step should be to put an end to the violence and return to the negotiations on building trust between Israel and Palestine in order to find a solution based on the coexistence of the two states.

Yesterday, we targeted an important base of operations for Hamas' military intel in Al Jala Tower in Gaza.

The base gathered intel for attacks against Israel, manufactured weapons & positioned equipment to hamper IDF operations.
