A potential response from the Israeli army was expected after earlier on Saturday, its border guard sustained injuries during the protests in Gaza. More than 40 Palestinians were injured by Israeli soldiers at the border, the Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed.
Explosions were heard in the central Gaza Strip on late Saturday, purporting that a missile attack has been conducted by the Israel Defense Forces across the border, social media reports indicate.
At least five rockets have been reportedly launched from across the border, causing power outages.
Footage allegedly showing the attack has also been shared online.
A mortar launch towards Israel was also reported later, but it presumably misfired.
On Saturday, Palestinians held a rally on the border of the Gaza Strip to commemorate the 52nd anniversary of the fire of the Al-Aqsa mosque and to protest against the occupation of the Palestinian territories by Israel. The weekly marches at the Gaza-Israel border were suspended in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The protesters demanded Israel lift the blockade of the Gaza Strip, according to the local media reports.
The IDF later confirmed it was responsible for the airstrikes, saying they targeted Hamas positions.

"Fighting planes attacked four [Hamas] storage and production sites last night. The extensive attack was carried out in response to riots that took place in the northern Gaza Strip, during which shots were fired from the Gaza Strip, wounding a border fighter", the military said.
The Israeli army also tweeted earlier in the evening, it has been decided to "reinforce the Gaza Division with additional forces" in the wake of recent events.
