The Tangerang Class I Prison, housing 2,000 inmates, is located on the Java island in the Indonesian province of Banten. The cause of the fire has not yet been revealed.
At least 40 people died in a jail in Indonesia’s Banten province after a fire broke out overnight, CNN Indonesia reported on Wednesday, citing local officials.
The prison, located in the city of Tangerang, was reportedly evacuated. The number of injured has risen up to 39 people, according to latest reports.
"The fire occurred at 1.50 a.m. in Block C of the Class I prison in Tangerang," public relations correctional facility head Rika Aprianti said on Wednesday.
According to her, the number of dead may rise. Some casualties in the fire are currently receiving medical treatment at the Tangerang Regional Hospital, with emergency services "concentrating on recovery, evacuating victims."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
