'Unacceptable': Moscow Slams Detention of Russian Citizen in Prague as Politically Motivated
15:36 GMT 12.09.2021 (Updated: 18:33 GMT 23.06.2024) Earlier in the day, a spokesman for the Czech police presidium, Ondrej Moravcik, said that a Russian citizen had been detained at the Prague Airport based on an international arrest warrant issued by Ukraine.
The head of the Russian Investigative Committee will look into the reasons and legal grounds for the detention of a Russian citizen at the Prague Airport, the committee said Sunday.
The Czech police earlier in the day confirmed that a Russian national was detained at the Prague Airport due to an arrest warrant issued by Ukraine.
"The chair of the Russian Investigative Committee [Alexander Bastrykin] has ordered a study of the reasons for the detention of a Russian citizen in the Czech Republic", the committee said in a statement.
Bastrykin requested the study about the detention in light of the "unacceptability of abusing international legal accountability mechanisms for political motives", the statement said.
Earlier in the day, Alexander Molokhov, the head of a working group on international legal issues at Crimea's mission under the Russian president, said that a participant in the events in Crimea in 2014 that resulted in its reunification with Russia was detained at the Prague Airport. According to Molokhov, the person detained was Alexander Franchetti.
"The Czech Republic, apparently, decided to justify its inclusion on the list of countries unfriendly to Russia and to curry favour with Ukrainian neo-Nazis. Today, the famous hero of the Crimean Spring, Alexander Franchetti, was illegally detained at the Prague Airport", Molokhov said.
Kiev has brought charges against Franchetti, who is now facing deportation to Ukraine, the official added.
