The school was locked down, and pupils and staff were said to have been confined to their classrooms or offices.
An 18-year-old suspect who opened fire in the Mansfield Timberview high school in Arlington, Texas, and injured four people, has been taken into custody.
Hours after the shooting, the Arlington Police Department confirmed that he had been arrested without incident and charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault with a gun.
The suspect, identfied as Timothy George Simpkins, fled from the school after the Wednesday morning shooting and drove off in a silver Dodge Charger, police said.
Police had given an all-clear for students to leave the Mansfield Timberview high school in Arlington, Texas, where a shooter had gone on the rampage earlier in the day.
After the all-clear signal, pupils began to leave the school building to board buses lined up outside to take them to a location where they were reunited with their parents.
Four people have been confirmed as having been injured, and the suspect is on the run.
“What we believe happened … is that there was a fight between a student and another individual in a class and a gun was used. And there are four victims,” Arlington Asst. Police Chief Kevin Kolbye said.
Two of the victims received gunshot wounds during the incident and have been transported to hospitals for medical treatment, Kolybe said, noting that he is not aware of the severity of the wounds.
The police said that the person of interest in the shooting is Timothy George Simpkins – a Black male 18 years of age – was the only shooter involved in the incident.
"We have a car that he is currently driving. We believe he is driving a 2018 Silver Dodge Charger… We currently have multiple agencies, including the US Marshals task force that is looking for this individual," he said, adding that anyone who sees him should call emergency services and not engage him.
The incident seems to have been sparked by a fight between Simpkins and another student in a classroom at the high school, although Kolbye said that they do not know whether Simpkins was a student there or not.
The shooting was not a random act of violence or an instance of someone targeting a school, but rather, a case of someone drawing a weapon during a fight, Kolbye said.
A video from a classroom has been shared online by one of the parents, who says her daughter texted her that there's been a shooting at school and sent her the footage. Several gunshots can be heard in the video.
There was a large police and firefighter presence at the scene.
