When John Montagu, Fourth Earl of Sandwich, asked for his dinner to be put between two slices of bread so he could carry on gambling without the interruption of meals, he could little have guessed how popular his invention would be almost 300 years later. But the sandwich is now a global staple - so let's hear it for International Sandwich Day!
What is the best thing about sandwiches? Well, pretty much everything! Their variety is endless: they can be big or small, full of meat, fish, or vegetables, come in small triangles or giant rolls, which means that somewhere there is a perfect sandwich for everyone.
