Shooting Attack Near Jerusalem's Temple Mount Leaves One Dead, Three Injured - Videos
07:53 GMT 21.11.2021 (Updated: 10:01 GMT 21.11.2021) The assault occurred at around 9 a.m. local time (7 a.m. GMT) near the Chain Gate in the Old City, one of the entrances to the Temple Mount. Police immediately cordoned the area off, to keep any visitors out.
A man opened fire in the Old City of Jerusalem on Sunday morning, killing one and injuring at least three others, the police said. Reports suggest that the attacker was killed by police during arrest.
"A terrorist armed with a Carlo-type weapon (a submachine gun) carried out a shooting in the Old City", police said in a statement, noting that the perpetrator has already been "neutralised".
The terrorist was known to police and affiliated with Hamas, according to Public Security Minister Omer Bar-Lev.
"This is the second terrorist attack in Jerusalem in recent days. I have instructed the security forces to mobilise accordingly and demonstrate vigilance, also due to concern over copycat attacks", Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said after he met with senior law enforcement officials.
Arutz Sheva later reported that the attacker had been identified as Fadi Abu Shahidam, a resident of the Shuafat refugee camp.
"The police response was quick, this is a serious incident - carried out by a source familiar to us. We will continue to investigate the circumstances and the immediate circles of the perpetrator until we find the verdict", Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai said.
In the meantime, Israeli Channel 12 has reported that the attack was premeditated and that all involved were Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem.
Several videos, purportedly taken at the site of the incident, have since been uploaded on Twitter.
The Hamas organisation didn't claim responsibility for the attack, but praised the gunman, saying it was a "heroic operation".
The shooting is the second attack near the Temple Mount in the past few days after a knife-wielding man stabbed two officers on Hagai Street.
