MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The United Kingdom will look into contributing to new NATO deployments in eastern Europe in the event of escalation in Ukraine, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said.
"If Russia invades Ukraine we would look to contribute to any new NATO deployments to protect our allies in Europe," Johnson told lawmakers.
Johnson also said that he believes "all of Russia’s fears" in relation to security guarantees "could yet be allayed."
The Prime Minister added that he is ready to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Earlier in the day, UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said the UK is unlikely to send a military contingent to Ukraine amid rising tensions no matter how the situation develops.
"As the defence secretary has already said, it is unlikely that there will be the circumstance," Truss told lawmakers when asked under what condition the UK can send combat units to defend Ukraine.
The UK has helped train 20,000 Ukrainian troops and is also working with its partners for them to provide the same support to Ukraine, the official added.
