Florida became the latest US state to sharply restrict abortions after Governor Ron DeSantis signed a 15-week ban into law on Thursday.
"We are here today to protect life," DeSantis said at Nacion de Fe in Kissimmee on Thursday. "We are here today to defend those who can't defend themselves."
The bill slashes the latest date at which a woman can obtain an abortion by nine weeks, from 24 weeks to 15 weeks. The only exceptions are if the abortion is necessary to save a mother's life, prevent serious injury to the mother, or if the fetus has a fatal abnormality.
DeSantis' move is just the latest in conservative legislative victories against abortion, which have followed the US Supreme Court's hearing of several abortion cases late last year, including one in which the Mississippi government asked the high court to reconsider its decision in Roe vs. Wade. The 1973 case legalized abortion nationwide as part of a woman's right to privacy, and created a legal framework for regulating it.
Just hours earlier, Kentucky's General Assembly voted to override Governor Andy Beshear's veto of a 15-week abortion ban. A day prior, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt signed a law prescribing felony charges for healthcare workers who perform an abortion in the state, unless the mother's life is in danger. Two weeks ago, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey signed the state's own 15-week abortion ban into law.
Another type of law passed in Texas last year, which Idaho attempted to emulate, seeks to ban abortions extremely early, at just six weeks after conception, and to enforce it by way of third-party lawsuits. The structure is designed to frustrate attempts by the courts to strike them down outright.
The laws are all in open defiance of the high court's decision in Roe, which said that states cannot restrict abortion at all during the first trimester, which ends at roughly the 13th week of pregnancy, and could regulate but not ban abortions during the second trimester, which ends at roughly the 28th week.
The governors of many of the states pushing tight abortion bans have each claimed their still is the most pro-life state in the country. Many of the same states have also passed laws restricting the rights of transgender people by defining people only by the gender they were assigned at birth, as well as regulating school education about sex and sexuality, including LGBTQ identities.
