Ukrainain Nationalists Have Mined Overpass in Donetsk Region, Want to Blow It Up and Blame Russia - MoD
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Ukrainian militants have mined a dam and an overpass in the Donbass, Col. Gen. Mikhail Mizintsev, the head of the Russian Defense Ministry's National Defense Control Center, said on Thursday.
"In Svetlodarsk, the Donetsk People's Republic, militants of Ukrainian armed formations mined the dam of the reservoir of the Uglegorsk thermal power plant. In the event of an explosion, the city of Svetlodarsk, the villages of Mironovsky, Luganskoye and a number of other localities with a total population of more than 15,000 people will be in the zone of possible flooding,” Mizintsev told a briefing.
The defense official added that Ukrainian forces have mined an overpass through the railroad tracks in the Konstantinovka town in Donetsk region and plan to “blow it up and accuse Russian armed forces of destroying civilian infrastructure.” According to Mizintsev, the Western media will then share yet another fake report about “atrocities committed by Russians.”

London Imposes Largest Asset Freeze in UK History on 2 Associates of Abramovich
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on Russian businessmen Eugene Tenenbaum and David Davidovich, freezing their assets worth up to 10 billion pounds ($130.6 billion), UK Foreign Office said on Thursday, calling them longstanding business associates of Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.
"The UK has today sanctioned Eugene Tenenbaum and David Davidovich, bringing the total number of oligarchs, family members and associates sanctioned to 106 since February. Foreign Secretary, LizTruss announced the government will freeze assets connected with the pair, estimated to total up to £10 billion, the largest asset freeze action in UK history," a statement said.
The foreign ministry added that the sanctions were co-ordinated with action taken by the island nation of Jersey earlier this week to impose a formal freezing order on assets suspected to be connected to Abramovich.
Tenenbaum described himself as one of Abramovich’s closest partners, while Davidovich was named by Forbes as his low profile right-hand man, the statement noted. According to the statement, Tenenbaum, who is a director of Chelsea Football Club, on February 24 took control of Abramovich-linked company Evrington Investments Limited, and in March, Davidovich took the company over from Tenenbaum.

Ireland's Military Aid to Ukraine Reaches $35Mln - Foreign Minister
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Irish Foreign and Defense Minister Simon Coveney said on Thursday that Ireland has allocated 33 million euros ($35 million) in military aid to Ukraine in the form of body armor, medical supplies and fuel.
"To date, Ireland has committed 33 million euros of assistance to the Ukrainian military. The Irish contribution focuses on non-lethal weapons, but it is still important military assistance in terms of body armor, medical supplies, fuel and other military equipment," Coveney said at a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba in Kiev.
This week the European Union has authorized another 500 million euros of military assistance to Ukraine and "Ireland will contribute fully to that funding," Coveney added.
Furthermore, Ireland understands clearly that at this time "Ukraine needs strong practical support in defending itself," the minister said, stressing that this is why such a traditionally militarily neutral country as Ireland "is not neutral on this conflict."
Coveney stressed that Ireland "is strongly advocating for the maximalist approach in the context of sanctions against Russia," which are meant to serve as a deterrent to the continuation of this conflict.
"We believe that we need to move beyond of what has currently been agreed collectively in the EU, to include an oil embargo in the 6th package of sanctions," he added.
Ireland also ensured non-military support of Ukraine by rendering humanitarian assistance amounting to 20 million euros and providing 350 tonnes of medicine, products and hygiene, as well as by hosting Ukrainian refugees, the number of whom has reached 23,000 so far, Coveney said.

Russia Not Planning to Enter ‘Sanctions War’ With Other Countries - Foreign Ministry
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Moscow, in its response to sanctions against Russia, does not intend to enter a "sanctions war" with other countries, Dmitry Birichevsky, the head of the Russian foreign ministry's economic cooperation department, said on Thursday.
"There will be retaliatory measures from us. In some areas, we have already taken countermeasures, but we do not intend to enter a sanctions war or sanctions hysteria," Birichevsky said on air of Russian broadcaster RT.
Russia understands that sanctions are a double-edged sword, Birichevsky noted, saying that a country that imposes sanctions may suffer more from them.
"As for the impact on the Russian economy, these steps were quite predictable. We had the experience and time to prepare for them. As you can see, our economy quickly adapted to the previous sanctions that were imposed in 2014," Birichevsky added.

ECB President Says Boycott of Russian Oil, Gas Will Have Serious Consequences
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - President of the European Central Bank (ECB) Christine Lagarde said on Thursday that a boycott of Russia's oil and gas is bound to have serious ramifications and that the situation is being carefully monitored.

"On the oil and gas front, an abrupt boycott [against Russia] would have [a] significant impact, and staff monitors that very carefully," Lagarde said at a press conference after the ECB Governing Council meeting in Frankfurt.

The European Union is currently considering an embargo on Russia's energy exports, including oil, coal and gas.

Sullivan: Russian Strike on NATO Nation Supplying Materiel to Kiev Would Invoke Article 5
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - A Russian strike on a NATO country where military assistance for Ukraine is present would be a "game changer" and invoke Article 5 of the alliance's founding treaty, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on Thursday.

"The United States is not operating inside the territory of Ukraine. So if the Russians were to obviously strike NATO territory where the materiel is being assembled, that would invoke Article 5 and be a complete game changer," Sullivan said at an event hosted by the Economic Club of Washington, DC.

He said that Russia's attempts to interdict this materiel inside Ukraine have been limited.
"Of course, that's something we're constantly watching. Part of the effort is to ensure there is a resilient and diverse method of getting it in," he added.
Article 5 provides for collective defense – if a NATO ally is the victim of a military attack, every other member of the alliance will consider it to be an act of violence against all members and will take necessary actions.
