The humanitarian operation to evacuate civilians from the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol concluded on Saturday due to unprecedented measures by Russia with 51 people, including 11 children, having been rescued, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.

On March 7, the Donetsk People’s Republic and Russian forces surrounded Mariupol and began a liberation campaign, as fighters from the nationalist Azov battalion hid in the underground tunnels of the Azovstal plant, taking hostage their own civilians.

Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine in February, amid intensifying attacks of Kiev's troops against the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR). According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the goal is to protect the people of Donbass, "who have been subjected to abuse, genocide by the Kiev regime for eight years."

Russian Defense Ministry Says Almost 20,000 People Evacuated From Ukraine, Donbass

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Almost 20,000 people, including nearly 1,000 children, have been evacuated to Russia from dangerous regions of Ukraine and Donbas over the last 24 hours, the head of the Russian National Defense Control Center, Mikhail Mizintsev, said on Sunday.

"Despite all the difficulties and hurdles caused by Kiev, in the past 24 hours, without involvement from the Ukrainian authorities, 19,834 people, including 970 children, have been evacuated to the Russian Federation from dangerous areas of the people's republics of Donetsk and Lugansk and Ukraine," Mizintsev said, adding that a total of 1,185,791 people, including 206,610 children, have been evacuated since the beginning of the special operation.

Mizintsev added that over 9,500 temporary accommodation facilities for arriving refugees are open in Russia.

US Ambassador to UN Says Russians 'Have Nothing to Celebrate' Ahead of May 9 Celebrations

MOSCOW, May 8 (Sputnik) - US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield made disparaging remarks about Victory Day celebrations in Russia on Sunday, claiming that Russians “have nothing to celebrate” on May 9.

"They have nothing to celebrate tomorrow. They have not succeeded in defeating the Ukrainians. They've not succeeded in dividing the world or dividing NATO and they have only succeed in isolating themselves internationally and becoming a pariah state around the globe. So what they are celebrating tomorrow is their own lack of success," Thomas-Greenfield told CNN.

This is not the first time senior US officials verbally attack Victory Day, one of the most important national holidays in Russia commemorating the defeat of Nazism and end of World War 2. On Saturday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is allegedly trying to “manipulate historical memory” to make a case for Russia's special military operation in Ukraine.

White House: G7 Countries Committed to Phasing Out or Banning Russian Oil Imports

The US announced on Sunday the G7 states have agreed to reduce or ban Russian oil imports, as well as ensure stable global energy supplies.

The leaders of the G7 countries met virtually earlier in the day to discuss the latest developments in Russia's special military operation in Ukraine and its global impact, as well as efforts to support Ukraine.

"Today, the entire G7 committed to phasing out or banning the import of Russian oil," a senior Biden administration official told reporters on Sunday.

"The G7 also committed to work together to ensure stable global energy supplies, while accelerating our efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels," he added.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Group of Seven (G7) will continue providing military assistance to Ukraine, as well as support its economic, energy and cyber security, G7 leaders said in a joint statement on Sunday.

"Today, we, the G7, reassured President Zelenskyy of our continued readiness to undertake further commitments to help Ukraine secure its free and democratic future, such that Ukraine can defend itself now and deter future acts of aggression," the statement read.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - US first lady Jill Biden paid an unannounced visit to Ukraine, her press pool said on Sunday.

"The motorcade drove through Uzhhorod and arrived at a public school here called School 6. The school is now being used as temporary housing and shelter for 163 displaced Ukrainians, including 47 children," the press pool said.

Total of 182 Civilians Evacuated From Azovstal Plant in Mariupol, DPR Says

A total of 182 civilians were evacuated from the Azovstal plant in Mariupol during the Russian-led humanitarian initiative facilitated by the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Donetsk People's Republic's (DPR) Territorial Defense Headquarters said on Sunday.

"A total of 182 people, including the elderly, women and children, were evacuated from the territory of the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol," the DPR defense headquarters said on its Telegram channel. "All the released civilians were taken to the village of Bezimenne, where they were offered accommodation, food and medical assistance".

The statement noted that those who wished to leave for Kiev-controlled areas were handed over to the representatives of the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The Petrovsky city district was targeted using 122-mm caliber artillery at 23:55 local time (20:55 GMT) on Saturday, the DPR mission said on its Telegram channel.

The Petrovsky district in the city of Donetsk has been regularly shelled by Ukrainian troops since 2014, when DPR declared independence from Kiev.
