Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine in February in response to calls from the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics for protection against intensifying attacks by Ukrainian troops. The Russian Defence Ministry said the goal of the operation, which targets Ukrainian military infrastructure, is to "demilitarise and de-Nazify" Ukraine.
Russian forces and the militias of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics are continuing to advance in the special operation, pushing Ukrainian forces out of Donbass. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces continue to shell the territory of the republics.
Since the start of Russia's special military operation, over 1.5 million people, including more than 250,000 children, have been evacuated to Russia, according to the Russian National Defence Control Centre.

Ukraine 'Robbed' People in Kherson Region, Blocking Their Accounts - Administration
Ukrainian authorities have blocked bank accounts on the territory of the Kherson region, "stealing" local people’s savings, Kirill Stremousov, the deputy head of the regional military-civil administration, told Sputnik.

"People can't withdraw money. Their cards are no longer being serviced. ATMs are not working after the disconnection of communications and the internet by Ukraine. Ukraine has done everything to rob people so as not to pay the money that they had left in their bank accounts… They purposefully did everything so that people cannot withdraw funds from their accounts," Stremousov said.

He added that within a few days, banks are expected to open in the Kherson region that are integrated into the Russian banking system.

On Tuesday, Stremousov told Sputnik that the Kherson region plans to hold a referendum on joining Russia, and it is estimated that at least 60-70 percent of the local population will agree to become a part of Russia. He later specified that the referendum will only be possible once the situation in the region fully stabilizes.

US Senators Urge Tighter Sanctions on ‘Enablers’ of Russia's Operation in Ukraine - Letter
A bipartisan group of US senators on Friday sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen urging her to tighten sanctions on the so-called “enablers” of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine.
“We write to you regarding the need to increase sanctions on enablers of the Putin regime in Russia, including those who provide support for Russia’s unjustified invasion of Ukraine,” the letter said. “The goal of such sanctions should be to ensure that these individuals do not have access to assets in the United States or ability to travel to the US.”
The lawmakers specifically urged Yellen to consider a list of 6,000 such officials compiled by an organization linked to opposition figure Alexei Navalny.
The letter specifically pointed to “lower-tier” Russian officials, including members of the military, legislators, senior federal workers and propagandists as targets for further sanctions. It was signed by members of the Senate Intelligence Committee, including Mark Warner, Marco Rubio, Ron Wyden and James Risch.
